Volvo Ocean Race - Time for change aboard Dongfeng

Volvo Ocean Race 2014-15, OBR Yann Riou reports on Dongfeng Race Team’s progress.

Weather conditions: Reaching 15-18 knots

- Position of the boat at sea: South Atlantic, approx 400 nautical miles east off coast of Brazil
- Position of the boat in the fleet: Four

Honestly, I’m not really sure what to tell you, I’ve got writer’s block.

I suppose I could tell you we changed sails to the Mast Head 0 and the Frac0. Does that interest you? If so great, because they were the biggest moments of our day… As for the rest of the ‘news’ we’re going straight and the boat is on a constant incline.

At this rate we’re all going to end up with one leg shorter than the other.

Actually I forgot, we did do something cool. We put up the wind generator. Kevin was the man tasked with the mission. Poor guy, lost two hours of his life doing it… so I need to tell you about it. We’re not trying to get one up on Vestas. Actually, the truth is we’re getting a little bit stressed about the fuel situation onboard. Just to explain, without fuel there’s no electricity and without electricity we’re basically sailing blind and drinking seawater. This is the first time we’re sailing in real race conditions and of course we have the rules that come with. The imposed media and telemetric equipment, of which some were fitted late, need to stay on 24/7.

It’s not easy to be able to audit the consumption before the start. On top of that, we need to add the duration of the leg, which will be at least one or two days more than estimated.

So we figured we’re a bit short and have started saving energy. We’re switching computers off, limiting the use of fans and now, we reckon we’re ok, just. We have what we need to get to Cape Town.

So why the wind generator? Just a precautionary measure, seeing what we can get from it just in case…

The latest position report just came in and it would appear things are changing up a little. Good, it is about time.

Powered by the wind, by the way…
On a mis l’éolienne.
