The latest forecast and route projections for the opening stanzas of the 2014-15 Volvo Ocean Race, show that winds are expected to increase, and route options have tightened.
:
As predicted previously navigators are expected to sail a more direct route to Gibraltar. That hypothesis is borne out by the latest information from Predictwind routing function.
Although two courses are always produced, both are very similar in the recommendation, which is to hug the Spanish coast until the early hours of Sunday morning, before setting a course that that will take them close to the Moroccan coast before heading for Gibraltar.
While the race will start in light winds, from Sunday the breeze is expected to increase to 12-17knots on Sunday.
After the start the fleet is expected to have light reaching conditions for the first day, however these turn to headwinds and increase to moderate breezes the following morning.
The first boats are expected to pass through the Straits of Gibraltar between 8.00pm and 10.00pm on Sunday night.
