Sydney Marine Park would attract large industry compensation claims

In a long expected move which would have major repercussions for the NSW marine industry the NSW Opposition Leader John Robertson announced on Monday that a NSW Labor Government will create a dedicated Sydney Marine Park. If it was established, the Sydney Marine Park would have a mix of sanctuary areas, where recreational fishing is banned, and general use zones. It would become the seventh marine park along the NSW coast.
The Sydney Marine Park proposed by Labor would extend from Pittwater to Port Hacking, incorporating Sydney Harbour, Parramatta and Lane Cove Rivers, Middle Harbour, Pittwater, Narrabeen Lakes, Dee Why Lagoon, Botany Bay and Port Hacking. It will also extend three nautical miles off the coast to the limit of State waters.
The marine industry response is expected to be very strong. When this subject was first raised back in 2008, compensation payouts to marine industry businesses were signalled as very likely, along the lines of those received by the firearms industry, when the Australian government made major changes to gun laws in the late 1990’s.
Those industry compensation payouts exceeded $500 million dollars and with large numbers of retailers and trade level marine businesses in the greater Sydney area likely to be affected this proposal if legislated would no doubt attract very large industry claims.
