Welcome to Sail-World.com’s New Zealand e-magazine for September 25, 2014
The
Auckland On The Water Boat Show got underway today, with a crowd surging through the doors at 10.00am when the Show opened.
The show combines the usual under cover stands, with a parallel show on the water with a mix of top of the line craft, some classics and heritage boats. The Sealegs display is always a fascinating working exhibit.
The feature of the Show will be on Saturday then there will be an attempt to set a new world record for Stand Up Paddling. Hopefully 52 paddlers will paddle a Lancer AirDock down the Viaduct Harbour to set a new mark for the Guinness Book of Records.
The practice runs have been very encouraging, but maybe not with the full complement of paddlers aboard the AirDock.
Sail-World’s camera did a quick lap of the On the Water part of the Show this afternoon.
Certainly there are some impressive craft on display. We hope you have seen enough to see more and see the boats for yourself – it is unique opportunity, and the standard of the craftsmanship is just out of this world.
Following the conclusion of the ISAF Worlds in Santander, there has been some followup – with more images, interviews and comment.
In this edition we feature a short video interview with Jo Aleh and Polly Powrie, courtesy of Zhik.
They, or rather Jo Aleh, has penned a blog – post the regatta and makes some interesting points on their performance.
Speaking to people at the Show today who were in Santander, the key aspect of the regatta for New Zealand was the ten Olympic classes qualifying rather than the results achieved.
Santander offered some very difficult courses – often with winds very affected by surrounding buildings and topography. That is to say nothing of the 550 coach boats which seemed to be necessary for an entry of about 1400 sailors.
As Jo Aleh notes, somewhat philosophically, she and Polly Powrie were in the same situation in 2010 – two years out from their Gold Medal win in Weymouth in 2012.
Preparations for the Volvo Ocean Race continue with the competitors working their way through the job lists.
Team Vestas Wind, probably has the most difficult task of all, due to their late entry and limited time available.
In this edition we feature a small, behind the scenes, photo gallery of their preparations.
The In Port race gets underway in Alicante on October 4, 2014 and Leg 1 starts a week later. Sail-World will be reporting directly from Alicante during the next two weeks.

There’s several new marine products which may be of interest in this edition.
Navico have two announcements – the first a forward facing sonar device. Many local cruisers joke about the number of rocks they have hit in the Hauraki Gulf, at one time, or another. Fortunately, all of our encounters have been at relatively slow speeds, and no real harm was done. But it’s always worrying, and a bit embarrassing. Plus there is potential for more serious damage in powered craft. So Forwardscan should be on most boat owner's Shopping or Christmas List.
Also from Navico comes a new marine radio, which like most contemporary technology is rather misleading in its name. The iPhone is way more than just a phone, for instance. The new V90 has a radio receiver, hailer, foghorn, intercom, is an AIS receiver and will also permit the sharing of data via a network to other B&G chart plotter and displays.
Predictwind have announced a partnership with Iridium to offer a satellite communications platform for boats – with the pricing being comparable (or cheaper) than mobile phones and plans. The new Iridium GO! allows up to five devices to be connected on board at any one time, and is described as having your own cell-phone tower on board your boat.

There is no doubt that current communication technology allows people to work, or be in touch, away from the office. With technology like Iridium GO! you can be away cruising, without the worry that some deal will be falling through back at the office.
We have full details of all the products in the this edition of Sail-World, and you can catch up with Navico at the Auckland On The Water Boat Show.
