The opening day of the 2014 KIA Cold Hawaii PWA World Cup saw marginal, starboard tack conditions, but that didn’t prevent the elite of the wave sailing world from producing a great display of sailing during the Super Session, which took place after registration, which was held between 10am-12pm.

Twenty-four men signed up for the Super Session - resulting in three, eight man qualifying heats for the final - with the top two men from each heat advancing. Conditions were tricky with gusty, swinging winds making it difficult to time a gust with a suitable ramp, but the sailors adapted brilliantly to still provide an impressive array of jumping on their biggest equipment.

Advancing into the final were Victor Fernandez (Fanatic / North / MFC), Flo Jung (RRD / Gun Sails / Maui Ultra Fins / SWOX), Marcilio ‘Brawzinho’ Browne (Goya Windsurfing / MFC), Thomas Traversa (Tabou / GA Sails), Ricardo Campello (Patrik / Point-7) and Alex Mussolini (Tabou / GA Sails). However, there was no stopping the reigning world champion, with starboard tack jumping on offer, as Brawzinho somehow rotated through a brilliant double forward to take the opening victory of the week. Traversa wasn’t far behind the Brazilian as he landed a radical one-handed tabletop to claim second, followed by Jung, who completed the podium with a switch, back-to-sail cheese roll, which is the first time the ‘Ocean Jump’ has been seen during a PWA competition.

The forecast for tomorrow again shows wind from the east, but it may be slightly more offshore than today. Hopefully, conditions will allow the trials to be completed. If not we’ll have exclusive interviews together with other activities as we wait for suitable conditions. Although the forecast looks similar for the rest of the week, there is still uncertainty surrounding the weekend, which has shown the possible return of the prevailing westerly airflow for Saturday. As Cold Hawaii has proven over the years, conditions and forecasts can change rapidly, so we remain hopeful of achieving a result.

With the best of the wind being forecast for tomorrow morning, the skippers’ meeting will be held at 9am with the action commencing from 9:30am.
