Melges 32 U.S. National Championship 2014 - Newport, R.I. - Teams awoke to beautiful, cool and clear blue skies on Thursday morning, simply gorgeous conditions after a very dreary weigh-in Wednesday at the 2014 Melges 32 U.S. National Championship. Sunshine, perfect temps, low humidity and a fresh breeze filled the day as teams enjoyed a great practice session around midday with PRO Anderson Reggio and his race management team from Sail Newport.

'I really don't think that Newport has looked any prettier than it does right now. The weather is perfect. Really, really nice conditions, just perfect for a National Championship,' said John Kilroy Jr. who will helm Samba Pa Ti.

The stage is now set, for not only a very competitive event, but yet a regatta that will show off the power, fun, thrill and premium performance aspects of the powerhouse Melges 32.

'I love everything about this boat. There really is not anything that I don't love. The speed upwind and downwind - this boat is a blast.' commented a very happy and enthusiastic Chris Wientjes, owner of Stormvogel who has traveled all the way from Louisiana to compete. 'We are really enjoying this boat and the class - and let's face it, there is no better competition in the world than what we have right here in the Melges 32 class.'

'I love coming and sailing my Melges 32 because I get to spend time with my family - Ryan, Uncle Dick and my dad,' said Dalton DeVos who will steer Delta. 'Most of all, this boat is so fast. It is such a great feeling when you sail this boat. No other boat feels like the Melges 32 does.'

'I love this class and love the tone of this fleet. That's why I am here.' said Richard Goransson, owner of Inga From Sweden. 'Today was fun. It was really nice to have some breeze today.'

And, speaking of fun...

'What makes the Melges 32 so much fun is the performance when it powers up. They are fun in a light breeze. In a heavy breeze, well... they're even funner!' said Dick DeVos who will sail on Volpe, with his son Ryan at the helm.

'This weekend is all about the fun,' said Christian Olander tactician on Bronco. 'I really think Michael enjoyed being back on the boat today for the practice session. All Michael likes to do now is go fast on his boat. We are really looking forward to having a lot of fun this weekend - it's what is most important to us.'

Registration is complete. The skipper's meeting has concluded and some beer has been consumed. Now, it's time for this speed thirsty fleet to get down to the business of Melges performance racing! The first warning signal comes at 11 a.m. Friday, August 15 with as many as three races to be performed.
