RYA Sea Survival Handbook – 2nd edition now available

by Emma Slater on 31 Jul 2014
MOB - the greater the crew the better the chance SW
The RYA Sea Survival Handbook – second Edition is the official text for the RYA Basic Sea Survival Course and the RYA-ISAF Offshore Safety Course and supports ISAF approved Offshore Personal Survival courses. So if you’re attending a sea survival course or taking your boat offshore, whether for racing or cruising, this book is a must read.

Boating is one of the safest leisure and sporting activities, however, as with anything that pushes us to the edge of our abilities, there’s always a chance of accident or injury. Proper preparation makes us better able to cope and will significantly increase our chances of survival.

This new edition has been updated to include the syllabus for the ISAF Offshore Personal Survival Course and the latest information on sea survival. It is divided into two parts so that it more closely matches the syllabi of the two courses and supports other ISAF approved Offshore Personal Survival courses.

The book highlights the importance of having the correct safety equipment and will also give you the knowledge of how and when to use it. Chapters include; survival in cold water, lifejackets, buoyancy aid and liferafts; abandoning ship, rescue communication, weather, MOB, first aid, fire control and much more.

Steen Ingerslev, RYA Publications Manager commented: 'This second edition of our extremely popular RYA Sea Survival Handbook takes the book as a supporting text to a whole new level.

'We deliberately structured this edition into two logical parts so that it better supports the variety of international courses available including the RYA Basic Sea Survival Course, the RYA-ISAF Offshore Safety Course and the ISAF approved Offshore Personal Survival courses. The extensive use of illustrations throughout are designed in a way that supports the content without depicting the detail of latest fashions which will ensure the book’s relevance for years to come.

'We have also developed this title into an eBook edition, to add to our growing stable of digital editions, which includes specially designed interactive illustrations and end-of-chapter summaries to engage the reader and aid their understanding of the subject matter.'

Mike Golding, one of the world’s most accomplished and successful offshore sailors, who wrote the book’s foreword commented: 'Sea Survival training saves lives. It is essential knowledge for the modern offshore skipper. The stark fact is, if things do go dramatically wrong on-board, this knowledge can save lives.'
