The great Sunshine Coast Ocean Regatta relaunches next week

Sunshine Coast Ocean Regatta 2014 Caitlin Harvey
The Sunshine Coast Yacht Club will be reviving the much-loved Sunshine Coast Ocean Regatta next week (4 – 8 August) in the sparkling coastal waters between Noosa and Caloundra.

Registrations are still open for sailors who have decided not to go further North to the Hamilton Island Race Week this year. The Sunshine Coast Ocean Regatta (S.C.O.R.) also offers an alternative to the Brisbane to Keppel Yacht Race for sailors wanting to do a shorter race this year. Save on the expense of HF’s or satellite phones!

The race schedule will consist of the following:

Monday 4th August – Bay Race
Tuesday 5th August – Passage Race
Wednesday 6th August – Lay Day
Thursday 7th August – Winward/Leeward
Friday 8th August – Bay Race

All races will remain within sight of the beautiful Sunshine Coast with views to well known landmarks as Mudjimba Island, the Point Cartwright Lighthouse, Glasshouse Mountains, Mount Coolum and Mount Ninderry. The ‘Bay Races’ will make use of fixed navigation marks such as the Gneerings cardinal mark and the Mooloolaba Waverider Buoy.

The Regatta is open to owners of suitable racing and cruising yachts, multihulls and sportboats. Registrations have been extended until 5pm Sunday 3rd August. Berths for visiting competing boats at Mooloolaba Marina will be available for the period Saturday 2nd August - Sunday 11th August at no charge.

The original Sunshine Coast Ocean Regatta ran for 20 years through the 80s and 90s. It attracted huge names within the yachting industry, such as Hugh Treharne - the tactician of Australia’s winning America’s Cup team. In its prime, the prestigious event would host up to 60 boats.

Sunshine Coast Yacht Club veteran, Greg Gilliam remembers 'They were good days weren't they, with the lawn out here, and the jugs and the prawns from down the road... and the best bit was that the finish line to the bar is about 15 minutes!'

Notice of Race and entry forms can be found in the Events Calendar section on www.scyc.net.au. Eligible boats may send entries to the SCYC Regatta Office, together with the required entry fee of $200.00.

Come and enjoy a more relaxed pace of sailing on the beautiful Sunshine Coast at S.C.O.R. 2014.
