Equipo Español realiza su primer test en la Vuelta a Canarias

El Equipo Español que participará en la próxima Volvo Ocean Race realizará su prueba de fuego este sábado día 19 de julio en la Vuelta a las Islas Canarias. Junto al barco patroneado por el medallista olímpico Iker Martínez tomarán la salida otros dos Volvo Ocean 65, el Team SCA y el Team Brunel.

Será la primera vez en la que tres equipos de la Vuelta al Mundo a Vela tengan la oportunidad de medirse cuerpo a cuerpo, como caso excepcional. El reglamento prohíbe que los barcos se acerquen a menos de dos millas de distancia durante el periodo de preparación para la Volvo Ocean Race. La salida de la primera regata in-port tendrá lugar el día 4 de octubre, mientras que la etapa inaugural, con meta en Ciudad del Cabo, se dará el día 11 del mismo mes, todo ello en Alicante. Todos los equipos estarán en la ciudad levantina al menos dos semanas antes del primer pistoletazo.

La Vuelta a las Islas Canarias, que comenzará a las 12 del mediodía de Marina Rubicón, supondrá así mismo la primera oportunidad de ver en modo regata los nuevos monotipos Volvo Ocean 65, y de comprobar el rendimiento del equipo femenino tras dos años de entrenamiento en su base de Lanzarote, uno de los grandes enigmas de cara a la edición de este año.

Se prevé que la flota tarde aproximadamente tres días en cubrir la distancia de 650 millas de esta primera edición de un evento que Marina Rubicón prevé celebrar cada dos años. Servirá como indicador de lo que se puede esperar de los nuevos barcos, así como del estado de forma del equipo del vasco Martínez, que parte con una desventaja de entrenamiento de muchos meses respecto a los Volvo Ocean Race
