Sail 4 Cancer in Geelong

by Skandia Geelong Week media centre on 22 Jan 2004
Sail 4 Cancer, the charity which uses sailing as a medium for fund raising and convalescence,
has been appointed the Official Charity of Skandia Geelong Week 2004/6 building on the
partnership which was so successful at Skandia Cowes Week 2003. Sail 4 Cancer is also the
Official Charity of the Skandia Set Sail programme.

Richard Groome, one of the Charity’s Founders in the UK explained, ‘Skandia Geelong Week
marks the launch of Sail 4 Cancer Australia, a standalone subsidiary of its UK parent which
will be run entirely on a voluntary basis. Importantly, the funds raised within Australia will stay
in Australia to help with Australian projects. I would like to say a huge thank you to Skandia
for giving us this opportunity.’

Much of Sail 4 Cancer’s activities during Skandia Geelong Week 2004 will focus around
getting children affected by cancer out on the water – activities which Sail 4 Cancer’s Patron,
Nick Moloney, is keen to support.

Twenty children will be treated to a day out on ‘One & All’,
the visiting tall ship from South Australia. A further twenty children will also get the chance to
explore the super maxi ‘Skandia’ whilst she is berthed in Geelong. They will also meet the
crew who steered ‘Skandia’ to glory in the recent Rolex Sydney to Hobart race. Several of
the Skandia Squad crews will also be getting cancer patients afloat prior to the start of the
event.

During Skandia Geelong Week, Sail 4 Cancer will also be running the infamous Lewmar
Winch Grinding Competition on their Geelong stand (in front of the main stage). In addition
to a selection of prizes for the fastest male, female and mixed teams, there will also be a Star
Prize which will be drawn at random. Therefore, anyone can win even if they don’t clock up
the fastest time. Each participant will be asked to make a minimum donation of $5 to take
part. For all those budding America’s Cup enthusiasts out there the time to beat is 8.15
seconds!

André Oszmann, Skandia Group Marketing Director, added: ‘The presence of such a worthy
and apt charity as Sail 4 Cancer was a key component of the success of Skandia Cowes
Week 2003. By raising their awareness to the sailing community, they were able to
demonstrate the benefits they are providing to cancer-sufferers and their families. I’m really
pleased that we are now welcoming them to do the same at Skandia Geelong Week.’

Sail 4 Cancer was set up by a group of keen sailors who have lost a friend/family member to
cancer in recent years. Sail 4 Cancer raises funds for cancer treatment/research through the
organisation of high profile sailing events in both the UK and Australia. The Charity also
provides sailing opportunities for cancer patient/their families, through a network of Sailing
Centres, with the aim of improving quality of life. Sail 4 Cancer is run entirely on a voluntary
basis.
