Sail Sandy 2014 opened up to multihulls

by Chris Furey on 8 Jul 2014
Mixed Multihulls - Sail Sandy Chris Furey
Sandringham Yacht Club extends an invitation to all off the beach Multihull classes to join with the traditional monohull fleet at their signature Sail Sandy Regatta to be conducted on the waters of Port Phillip over the weekend of October 18th and 19th, 2014.

Originally, it had been decided to invite one Multihull class, the Vipers, to join in the fun at Sail Sandy 2014 but following unprecedented interest from several other Multihull classes, it has been decided that all Multihull classes are now welcome to enter the Regatta. Following a review of the NOR, Sail Sandy 2014 entry is open to all off the beach Dinghies and Multihulls with a YV Yardstick.

This iconic event has become the traditional opening regatta of the season for Off the Beach sailing on Port Phillip and regularly attracts large entries as local and Inter-State skippers and crews shake off the winter cobwebs and commence their campaigns for a new season. Sail Sandy also provides a venue for Class Associations and Training Squads to bring their members together early in the sailing season.

Sail Sandy fleets race on several different courses in front of the Sandringham Yacht Club, on the same waters as the ISAF World Cup ‘Sail Melbourne’ regatta held there each December. The venue offers fantastic sailing in unobstructed waters with world class venue facilities, race management and event support. There are on-site ship-wrights, a Chandlery and nearby Sail Makers to take care of all your regatta needs.

The Sail Sandy dinghy fleet typically may include, but is not limited to: Optimists, Sabots, O’Pen Bics, Minnows, International Cadets, 125s, 420s, 470s, Contenders, Tasars, Sabres, Ok dinghies, Finns, all three modes of Lasers, 29ers, 49ers, Musto Skiffs, International 14 ft skiffs and Kiteboards. Multihull classes we would love to join us include Vipers, Taipans, Hobie 16s, Arrows, Mosquitoes, Nacras, Paper Tigers and A-Class cats.

Sail Sandy 2013 saw nearly 200 entries but with the event now opened up to all OTB Multihulls, the expectation is that we will see a record fleet enjoying the wonderful waters off Sandringham at Sail Sandy on the third weekend of October 2014.

Trophies are awarded for One Design Classes with sufficient entries or for Combined Divisions under YV Yardstick with the overall winners of Sail Sandy being calculated using results weighted across all classes and divisions. Overall Sail Sandy Regatta honours have been spread across many different classes over the years.

With world class facilities, a well stocked canteen and veritable army of friendly, willing and well skilled volunteers, you can be assured of a great time and great racing at Sail Sandy 2014. For the non-sailors or family members and guests, there are excellent viewing opportunities from the northern deck of the yacht club adjacent to the Members Bar and the highly acclaimed Harbour View Restaurant.

For all enquiries regarding Sail Sandy 2014 please contact the Sandringham Yacht Club Boating Office, Tel 03 9598 7444 or email boating@syc.com.au

Sandringham Yacht Club looks forward to welcoming all competitors to Sail Sandy 2014.
