China e França são a base do Dongfeng para a Volvo Ocean Race 2014-15

Está definida a tripulação do Dongfeng para a Volvo Ocean Race 2014-15. Em Lorient, na França, base de treinamento da equipe, o comandante Charles Caudrelier anunciou o time e cumpriu a promessa de mesclar velejadores experientes com atletas chineses. É a primeira vez na história que quatro asiáticos participam da regata a bordo. A Volta ao Mundo começa no dia 4 de outubro, com a in-port race, uma regata de curta duração, em Alicante, na Espanha. Depois, os barcos partem para a Cidade do Cabo, na África do Sul.

'Essa equipe é um marco no desenvolvimento da regata', disse o CEO da Volvo Ocean Race, Knut Frostad. 'Estamos aumentando nossa base de fãs na China, uma chave estratégica para o mercado. Agora todos vão querer saber como estão os velejadores chineses a bordo. Além disso, a modalidade está crescendo no país depois dos Jogos Olímpicos de Londres, quando uma velejadora ganhou uma medalha de ouro'.

Aos poucos os chineses começam a povoar as regatas, principalmente a Volvo Ocean Race. Um velejador do país correu as edições de 2008-09 e 2011-12. Agora, o número subiu pra quatro e, até 2020-21, o objetivo é que um barco 100% asiático dispute a prova.


Jin Chen Hao (nome em português para Horácio), Jiru Yang (Lobo), Ying Kit Cheng (Kit) e Liu Ming (Leo) foram os velejadores chineses selecionados após seis meses de formação e 10.000 milhas velejadas, incluindo travessias oceânicas. Charles Caudrelier ressaltou que o fator decisivo para a escolha do quarteto foi a motivação.

'Sabíamos que havia muitos candidatos fortes e que o nosso processo de formação deveria ser rigoroso e intenso', disse o diretor da equipe de Bruno Dubois. 'Temos uma grande equipe, mas estes velejadores chineses têm muito a aprender'.

Charles Caudrelier completou a equipe com o sueco Martin Strömberg, ex-companheiro de Groupama, e com os franceses Thomas Rouxell, Pascal Bidégorry, Kevin Escoffier e Eric Peron. O nome do repórter a bordo será anunciado nas próximas semanas.

O Dongfeng Race Team também apresentou outros dois patrocinadores para a campanha: Aeolus Pneus, fabricante de pneus, e da cidade de Shiyan, onde fica a sede da montadora Dongfeng, famosa pelas montanhas Wudang e pelo berço do Kung Fu no Volvo Ocean Race

The Transat CIC off to a spectacular start
