Kieler Woche - Hat-trick for Philipp Buhl

Whereas the first five gold medals were won by international competitors, the German fleet were successful in the 470 Women, the 49er and the Laser. On top came two more gold medals in the Paralympic classes.

Philipp Buhl (Sonthofen/Germany) managed the hat-trick, in the 49er Erik Heil and Thomas Ploessel (Kiel/Germany) brought home the victory of Kieler Woche 2014. In 2012 they came in third and were ranked second in 2013. In the 470 Wagner and Elisabeth Panuschka (Berlin/Germany) brought home the overall victory in the final. No one could take away the leading position from the past days from the German sailors and silver medalists in London in the Paralympic classes 2.4mR and Sonar, Heiko Kroeger and Jens Kroker and Robert Prem and Siggi Mainka. In the first five final runs of the day, the gold medals went to Estonia, Greece, Italy, Spain and White Russia, then the German female sailors showed their strength.

Ranked second in the medal race, Philipp Buhl again claimed the gold medal. 'It was a calmer race, without hanging too much', said Buhl about the light wind race, which was won by Italian Alessio Spadoni. 'I had wanted to do the hat-trick and made it', the Laser sailor from Sonthofen (Germany) said smiling. Tobias Schadewaldt is ranked third right behind Karl-Martin Rammo from Estonia.

In the 470 Annina Wagner and Elisabeth Panuschka from Berlin were having an exciting neck-and-neck race with the leading team Lara Vadlau and Jolanta Ogar (Austria) with a more successful ending for the Germans. Rank three goes to the crew Nadine Boehm and Ann-Christin Goliass from Bavaria.

Almost at the same time, Heil and Ploessel crowned their good performance with winning the Kieler Woche for the first time. 'After the rankings three and two, it was our goal to continue the series,' said Heil. David Evans and Ed Powys from Great Britain won silver, followed by Jacopo Plazzi and Umberto Molineris (Italy).

In the Laser Radial, Lisa Fasselt (Essen/Germany), who was leading until then, messed up the final race. The last position in the final race meant ranking two in the overall result for the 25 year old. Tatiana Drozdovskaya from White Russia gained the overall victory with 12 points by winning the medal race, followed by Fasselt (30 points) and Pauline Liebig from the Audi Sailing Team Germany, who claimed the bronze medal (31 points).

In the Nacra 17, the Italians Bissaro and Silvia Sicouri (20 points) took away the gold medal from the Danish team Allan Noerregard and Line Just (25). Lorenzo Bressani and Giovanna Micol (Italy/29) defended rank three by finishing in third position in the double-rated medal race. Paul Kohlhoff and Carolina Werner (Kiel/Germany) ended up seventh after becoming eights.

In the Finn it was quite extreme. Deniss Karpak from Estonia decided the medal race for himself and thus won the gold medal. With the same point score, Bjoern Allasson from Sweden was in seconf. Both had an exciting final race with the double point score. On rank three is Giorgio Poggi (26 points) from Italy. Phillip Kasueske (VSAW Berlin/Germany) had the best placement of the German sailors in this fleet and just missed the top ten for the medal race with rank eleven.

In the 49er FX the Spanish team Tamara Echegoyen and Berta Betanzos came out on top against the Danish team Jena Hansen and Katja Salskov-Iversen. 'We did not expect this. Kieler Woche is an important regatta and the conditions with changing winds were very difficult in the past days,' winner Echegoyen is pleased.

The team on rank four from the previous year Victoria Jurczok and Anika Lorenz (Kiel/Germany) won bronze. The Skiffs are sailing three medal races each, where Leonie Meyer and Elena Stoffers (Osnabrück/Kiel / Germany) managed to move onto rank six by becoming first, eighth and second. The winners of the previous Kieler Woche Tina Lutz and Susann Beucke slipped down to rank eight.

In the 470, the Greeks Panagiotis Mantis and Pavlos Kagialis did not let go of the gold medal anymore. But Jasper Wagner and Dustin Baldewein from Berlin (Germany) managed to climb up to rank two by winning the medal race and thus could push the four time World Champion and Olympic winner Mathew Belcher with his crew Will Ryan down to rank three. The other German crews in the final of the top ten were on rank five (Ferdinand Gerz and Oliver Szymanski) and eight (Julian and Philipp Autenrieth).

Tomorrow the international classes will start, sailing until Sunday to win the Kieler Woche.
