39th Annual One More Time Regatta - Bloodhound wins

Bloodhound, Robert Gilbert's 98 ft Fife Cutter won the 39th annual One More Time Regatta for wooden hulled boats held in Santa Monica Bay June 21.
The race received its name in 1976 when the wind was too light and was run 'one more time'. The resulting race featured 35 knot winds and 10 plus foot seas and one of the racing yachts took out all the port windows on one side of the committee boat.
The One More Time is the second race of the California Classic Yacht Series.
Del Rey Yacht Club and Wooden Hull Yacht Club host the event. A post-race barbeque and party with inexpensive beer and wine and trophy presentation took place on DRYC's South patio.
The race featured thirteen classic designs ranging in age from 1924 yawl Emerald to 2007's 59 ft Marjorie, a custom ketch from Bristol, R.I. and in size from the 98 ft 'Hound' down to Painted Lady, a 17 ft Thistle sloop.
The weather was perfect June Southern California sailing weather: sunny with winds SSW from 12-15 knots and light to moderate seas.
Gilbert and his crew put up three headsails on the single-masted cutter and wisely decided against a main topsail; perhaps due to the amount of breeze.
B.F. Koehler's Starling Burgess 59 ft sloop Sally was second and had the lowest time over course.
Tom Zetlmaier's Rhodes 40 Spartan finished third with two-time One More Time winner Bequia taking a fourth.
Marjorie was the first split rigged boat to finish and came home fifth.
The event has been labeled more of a beauty pageant than a race but competitors aggressively went after the course and all but one were in by the 1700 time of race.
Bloodhound won despite having to do a 360 after touching one of the racing marks.
The race has been run as a pursuit start since 2011 and the weather has been excellent every year since the race was moved to the June date in 2012.
It has featured some very famous boats and skippers over its history.
