Light airs dominate Race eight of the Land Rover Winter Series

Land Rover Winter Series 2014 - A light and changeable breeze dominated Race eight of the Land Rover Winter Series which necessitated the shortening of the course for the 120 competitors in the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia organised race.
'It was a long tough race,' Damian Barker, owner of the Sydney 36CR Alpha Carinae, that won Division D.
'If you were in the breeze you were lucky and if you weren’t it was game over. Two things really went our way today: staying on the western side of Sow and Pigs which meant we were able to fall down onto the Junction Bell mark and getting around Junction Bell with some breeze.
'It’s our first win of the season – the crew made no mistakes and being out in front helped as we seemed to find the patches of breeze,' Barker added. Speedwell (Colin Geeves) finished second to Alpha Carinae with Sommerbreeze (Hans Sommer) third.
Sommerbreeze leads the Division D overall series pointscore by two points from Soundtrack (John Amos) and Crosshaven (Sean Rahilly and Justin Pelly), that both sit on equal points.
Race Officer Steve Kidson got the fleet away on time, on their respective course A, in a three-four knot mostly westerly breeze that was shifting either side of west. 'At 1100hours, there was eight-nine knots of breeze and as we went into sequence it dropped down to three-four knots,' Kidson said.
'It’s quite pleasant out on the Harbour – the sun is shining and there are a few clouds around but no rain. It’s a gentle sail today with every chance we’ll shorten.' At 1300hours, Kidson made the call to shorten.
'We’ve had boats reporting that they are seeing anything from half a knot to two knots at the top of the course,' he said later in the afternoon. 'The breeze has dropped to almost nothing at the finish line.'
At 1600hours, just half an hour prior to the race time limit, the breeze had swung to the north east but was still light at three knots. With no finishers being recorded in Division C, the race was abandoned for those competitors.
In Division F, Sean Barrett’s Jutson 31 Outlandish secured her first win of the season from Windflyt (Douglas Sturrock) and Syonara (Greg Maughan).
'Serendipity shows the influence of light airs in the results,' Barrett said this afternoon. 'We started and went right over to Bradleys Head with L’Eau Co about five boat lengths ahead of us and Syonara also out in front. We tacked on a small shift and got to the first mark with only Syonara ahead of us.
'We managed to catch Syonara just before South Head, got some clean air and kept our boat speed. We saw six knots coming back towards Shark Island and held onto a bit of a puff which helped us pull away from the fleet. We managed to get around Shark Island on a tight reach with our spinnaker up and power to the finish line
'The lightest we saw was 1.5 knots coming back on the first run from Garden Island to Shark Island,' Barrett added.
Windflyt leads the overall Division F series pointscore on countback from L’Eau Co (Grant Pollock) with Syonara three points adrift.
In Division J2, David Hundt’s Sagacious V secured her third win of the season from Denis Doyle and Lynne Smith’s Xc42 Sextant with Stephen Ball’s Yputakiteup third.
'The breeze was quite variable at the start and there was some congestion on the start line as boats jostled to find breeze. The early starters did not benefit,' Denis Doyle said.
'We had some breeze and tussled with Sagacious but they managed to pull away from us. We had a wonderful sail under beautiful blue skies and smooth seas.'
Following on from his win in Division A1 with his Corby 49 Vamp, David Fuller was lucky winner of the Range Rover Evoque for a week with Adrian Abbott’s Kirribilli, winner of Division A2, the lucky recipient of the Noakes Group Lift and Stand package.
Other divisional winners today were: Division B – L’Altra Donna (Andy Kearnan); Division E – Crusader (Jonathan Green); Division G – Marigot Bay (Merryl Semple); Division J1 – SailorswithDisabilities (David Leslie); and Division K – Star Ferry (John Conroy).
With eight of the ten race-series having been completed and the second drop being applied, it’s still very tight at the top of the leaderboard for the current overall series divisional pointscore leaders: Division A1 – Quest (Bob Steel); Division A2 – Kirribilli (Adrian Abbott); Division B – Next (Richard Holstein); Division C – Akela (Alan Mather); Division D – Sommerbreeze (Hans Sommer); Division E – Orbit (Matthew Brown); Division F – Windflyt (Douglas Sturrock); Division G – Itchy (Will Northam and Jamie Watson); Division J1 – L’Attitude (Robert Hunt, Jon Short and Miles Bastick); Division J2 – Inkonkoni (Arthur Lane) and Division K – LuLu Belle (Peter Lewis).
The Land Rover Winter Series continues with the penultimate race of the pointscore starting from 1130hours next Sunday, 29 June.
