The Whitbread winning maxi, Steinlager II, has been forced to retire from the ANZ Fiji race with rig damage.
Earlier this evening they contacted Maritime Radio to advise their plight and decision
'We are phoning to advise you that we have had to abandon the race as we have problems to our forestay and not able to propel at great speeds. We will still continue with the daily skeds. Currently in position 22 03.5S 175 51E heading for Fiji.'
Five boats have now retired from the 1100nm race from the original fleet of 20 starters.
Steinlager II is expected to arrive at Port Denarau Marina late Friday evening.
