Etchells Australasian Winters - Gen XY break jinx to take second win

Etchells Australasian Winter Championship 2014. The triumphant Gen XY team. Teri Dodds
Etchells Australasian Winter Championship 2014 - After 17 years and 17 different skippers winning the coveted Etchells Australasian Winter Championship trophy, the Gen XY team have broken the jinx to take out the trophy for a second time.

Brisbane’s Matthew Chew, Ashley Deeks, Brian Donovan and Paul Wyatt came into the regatta as winners in 2012. They then started the three-day regatta in the lead and never let up. They did however have serious competition from the 33-boat fleet. The Gen XY were up against Olympic and Etchells World champions, America’s Cup and Volvo Ocean Race competitors.

'The racing was really close right through the regatta.

'After last year where we were leading into the last day and then finished second, to win this year, we are stoked. It’s kind of unbelievable. I remember losing last year.

'We will be back next year. Maybe we can win two in a row,' a jovial Chew said. Chew also said his father was more anxious than himself about the final race day. He was ringing Chew’s partner Sarah Broad every five minutes as Broad watched the top mark roundings from the top balcony of the Newport Apartments.

In second overall came the Ciao team of Doug McGain, Mike O’Brien and Gary Adshead after a powerful display of Etchells racing in the stronger breeze and large swell.

Third place overall was subject to confirmation due to a protest from Race six. The initial results showed the Magpie team of Graeme Taylor, Steve Jarvin and James Mayo holding third with 24 points. The Roulette team of Mark Johnson, Nik Burfoot and Andrew Smith are provisionally in fourth place overall after a count-back.

It’s not really a regatta without some drama on the water. This year’s drama was saved until the last race, on the last leg.

Regatta Director Kevin Wilson explained; 'They (Iron Lotus) came around the leeward mark, through the gate for the last time and Tom King was clearly in third place. Bow 20 was in first, then Matty Chew and then Tom. And then there was clearly a big distance to fourth. Tom went out and then tacked onto starboard going upwind and Rapscallion was sailing downwind on starboard. Tom obviously saw that he wasn’t going to miss him and at the same time the starboard tack boat, Rapscallion, put his bow through King’s backstay and bought his mast down and that was the end of their race.'

The boats were locked together for about 15 minutes, but luckily Iron Lotus’s new set of North Sails Lotus were saved.

The Jury Chair finally advised that the result of the hearing was that Iron Lotus has been given redress of points equal to third place for Race six.

The overall results then changed to see three boats on equal third place with 24 points. On count bank Magpie held third, Iron Lotus moved into fourth and a disappointed Mark Johnson move back to fifth.

Race one

The breeze was up this morning. So was the swell. The fleet headed out for in a southerly, shifty wind of 15 knots, gusting to about 20.

Magpie had a great start at the pin end, sitting above Iron Lotus. The leaders bunched up on the right with only a few out left. At the top mark Roulette was in the lead with Magpie, Iron Lotus and Gen XY close behind in a tight pack.

By the second time around the top mark Magpie had grabbed the lead, Ciao had moved up to second and Roulette back to third.

Magpie then stretched their lead in the shifty winds and bumpy sea as they surfed their way to the finish, well ahead of Ciao and then Roulette.

Race two

The pressure was really on by the start of the final race of the regatta. The fleet lined up and pushed, and pushed as they approached the line and over for a general recall.

PRO Kevin Wilson then got on the radio and advised the fleet; 'That was the worst ever start for the weekend. Because you have been good we will go Papa again. Please behave yourselves.' The fleet heeded Wilson’s advice as they headed to the line and across for a clean start.

Chew said the day was all about tough racing. He went into the final race of the day with a three point advantage. 'It was very shifty out there. We just worked really hard. We went hard right and he (Ciao) went hard left to completely opposite sides of the course, but we came back in second. We just wanted to follow him (Ciao) and protecting from the guys behind us. We didn’t want them to get past. King was very close and so was Billy Merrington, who wasn’t in the running, but any points would have hurt us so we had to stay within two places.'

The star of Race two was clearly Ciao. They led the race from the start line to the finish line. 'We had a plan and we stuck to it,' McGain said. 'We wanted to get to the right. We started at the boat end pretty well flopped over to port straight away and banged out to the right hand side. Played a few little shifts out there, but kept going right and it did the trick.

'No one ever crossed us all day in that race. We did keep an eye on Mark Johnson for a while as we wanted to get him on the overall.

'We said that on the way in how we gradually improved in the regatta. We were getting better as the regatta was going on. It was probably due to a lack of time in the boat,' McGain said.

Gen XY finished in second place with big smiles and high fives around the crew. Peter Merrington’s Top 40 came in third and a delighted Roger Hickman with his Sun Tzu team in fourth.

In other results, the Corinthian and Masters divisions were won by Roulette’s Mark Johnson. The Grand Masters Division was won by Ciao’s Doug McGain.

The best placed first-time Winters regatta skipper was won by the team on The Doctor – Grant Allen, Matthew Turner and James Marshall.

The Premier Fleet prize went to the Sydney Fleet.

The Peter (Spike) Doriean Trophy for Most Outstanding Crew was won by Noel Paterson’s Waterloo Bay crew of Gary Van Lunternen and Scott Miller for challenging the top contenders, and for sailing the oldest boat in the fleet to an outstanding 10th overall.
