Riva Cup - Action underway on Lake Garda

by Elena Giolai on 31 May 2014
2014 Riva Cup - Korsar Elena Giolai
The Riva Cup 2014, taking place at Fraglia Vela Riva, is known as a 'tourist' regatta and is organised for enthusiasts who haven't lost their spirit of competition and sportsmanship despite being 'middle aged' as they combine the regattas with a family holiday on Lake Garda, Trentino.

Four classes are represented, the Int’l 14'skiff, the 505 and Korsar and the Dyas bulb boat. 10 nations are taking part including Canada, the USA, Great Britain, France, Denmark, Germany and Austria with around 100 boats and twice that number of sailors who along with their families are at Riva del Garda to enjoy the regattas and have fun in this family friendly location. Six regattas were completed on the first two days,(with one day of competition remaining), with a stiff southerly wind of 20 knots which created some technical problems for a few who had dis-mast or capsized. For the majority, however, it was two afternoons of great sailing. Tomorrow is the final day when the last two regattas will decide the medal winners in all categories.

In the 505 class only one point separates the top two crews in the standings: both of them German. Findel-Tellen are in the lead over Hunger-Kleiner. Bogacki- Dehne are third just one point ahead of Boehm-Ross. Winners of the last race were Koechlin- Achterberg.

Germans Mahnke-Blum have led in the Korsar category since the first day (2-1-2) and are closely followed by fellow Germans Braun-Kruck who were first in the last regatta. Thimme Uti and Frank made a great recovery finishing in third place after taking two firsts and a fifth today.

The most spectacular of the classes featured in the Riva Cup is the 14 foot International skiff, which has the youngest crews and was also the most difficult to manage in the strong gusts over Lake Garda, Trentino. Brits Massey-.Harvey dominate with four firsts, a second and a withdrawal. Close behind are Germans Voss-Eihe and the other Brits Fitzgerald-Dobson just one point behind.

All German crews are on board the Dyas bulb boats and after six races it's a tie with 13 points for the first two crews of Bersch-Schmidt and Vetter-Loew. They will battle it out for the top position tomorrow. Lotar Schmidt and Thomas Eckardt are in third place only two points behind.

Loads of amenity - Goes like a cut cat
As the first Cure 55 steps closer to being splashed it looked more like a Purosangue to me As the first Cure 55 steps ever closer to being splashed, I could not help thinking that it was a lot like the Ferrari Purosangue. More space than your typical two-seat hypercar, yet with the punch to dispatch distances and pretenders with complete ease.
