Taiwan scores for exhibitors, SCIBS one week away, boat show fever!!

by Jeni Bone, editor on 13 May 2014
This newsletter is later than usual, apologies. So many releases and leads from our region and beyond, it was difficult to know when to stop posting and save for tomorrow.

ASMEX starts next Tuesday and Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show next Thursday, with the official opening in the presence of the Governor of Queensland, Penelope Wensley and various local and industry dignitaries.

Riviera Festival of Boating coincides with SCIBS, as does the GTIM luxury lifestyle showcase at Sovereign Island, the celebration of boating at Marina Mirage and at Runaway Bay, Marine Auctions' massive auction of some of the best value pre-loved boats in the country. There’s so much going on up this way, it’s dizzying!

Thankfully, the weather is fair (this week) and mild, nobody has the ‘boat show flu’ as yet and we are all optimistic for pleasant days and the resulting visitation and sales that depend on fine weather.

This week, we have a smattering from all over the globe. Of interest, the results of the 2013 survey of Australian marinas, which will go a long way to lobbying government for funding that recognises the place of marinas in our communities, both as a place of recreational boating and as a vibrant social hub.

The inaugural Taiwan International Boat Show has been and gone, and while the dust settles, first reports are it was a major success, and a credit to organisers, TAITRA and the local manufacturers and boating industry. A strong and active Australian contingent attended and by all accounts, it will become a ‘must-attend’ on the Asia-Pacific calendar of events.

Lots of news from over the ditch this week, including expectations for the 2015 NZ Millennium Cup, which will relocate to the Bay of Islands, 21 to 23 January, and from forecasts from NZ Marine, will attract superyacht participants and media from around the globe.

I am eager to attend my first Millennium Cup, held in mid-summer in what must be one of the world’s most idyllic cruising grounds. That will be backed up by a trip to Auckland in March for the Volvo Ocean Race stopover (hope I get to jump back on the grind for the inshore race . . . I have been training!)

Plenty more news from our region in coming days, as well as a few more bursts of news from SCIBS, the first major boat national show for 2014 and one that sets the tone for the year.

Send in your news as you know we’re always interested.

See you at SCIBS!

Birds of prey. Insects. All of them airborne? How does it all apply here? Time to find out! All are airborne. The first three are birds of prey. The last one is an insect. All are so completely different. The first three have also had their name, formidable qualities and fantastic reputations applied to fantastic aircraft made by Boeing.

A look at The Ocean Cleanup and its the 30 Cities Program The cliche goes that one should avoid meeting one's heroes, as there's always a chance that the flesh-and-blood person might not live up to expectations. While I've never met Boyan Slat, I'd gladly take this risk.

Double Double
And the rest of the line is not toil and trouble, but quadruple, then another double… On the eve of the 100th Fastnet that has attracted some 464 entries, I heard of one entry in this record fleet that seemed so very apt. Not only because it includes the Commodore of the RORC, but because it combines two Brits and two Aussies.
