A group of 24 Minnows made their way to the Mandurah Easter Regatta this year for training and the opportunity to earn themselves a place in the Minnow Development team. 24 minnows competed in the respective gold, silver and bronze fleet at the annual training regatta.

As part of the regatta, the Minnow Association supported by Alcoa Kwinana ran a two day coaching clinic for the gold and silver fleets. 21 Minnow sailors attended the Alcoa training clinic on the Friday, followed by racing and coaching on the Saturday as part of the regatta.

Chelsea Hall, former world 420 would youth champion and current Australian 49er FX sailor put the sailors through their paces with every sailor coming out of the clinic and regatta a more competent and skilled sailor. The kids were trained in starts, boat handling, boat speed and race strategy in some difficult sea conditions over the weekend which proved positive towards the end of the regatta as the improvements in the sailors abilities were showcased in close racing, with only a few minutes from first place to the last place, as opposed to the 20 plus minute gaps in the first days of the regatta.

The Minnow Development Team comprised selection of the top 10 placegetters at the recent Minnow State Championships. Seven sailors have taken up the challenge to be coached and mentored by Minnow Squad Coach Chelsea Hall with the aim of presenting a tough WA challenge at this year’s National Titles to be held at The Cruising Yacht Club, Rockingham WA in January 2015. Chelsea who started her sailing career in a Minnow, is former 420 World Youth Champion and current 49er FX National Sailor, has a passion and dedication for coaching the Minnow sailors. A Squad session is held once per month at the members host clubs (Dunsborough Bay Yacht Club and The Cruising Yacht Club Rockingham) to sharpen the skills of our most elite sailors.
