Shanghai show impresses, SCIBS official launch, register now for ASMEX

by Jeni Bone, editor on 29 Apr 2014

The cloudy skies cleared today on Queensland's Gold Coast for the official launch of the 2014 Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show, with sponsors, a couple of prominent exhibitors, local and marine media, politicians and government reps gathered for the 22 day countdown til Show Time!

As well as plenty of familiar faces, 26-year veterans Barry Jenkins and Harry Davis among them, there was a coterie of new boat show crew, fresh faces and renewed interest from local media and a positive vibe in the lead up to SCIBS, May 22 to 25.

We have several stories this week from exhibitors bringing the latest and greatest to SCIBS: pontoon boats, power, sail, multihull behemoths and compact trailer-sailors, and for the ladies, how to secure your fare for a day of pampering and refreshments on the High Tea on the High Seas cruise onboard the superlative superyacht, Pure Adrenalin.

Each week, we will have all the news and latest products to launch at SCIBS, details of the program and any updates for exhibitors.

In other news - and there's plenty - there's still time to register for ASMEX, held over two days prior to SCIBS. Get online and read all about the quality line-up of speakers covering every aspect of exports, trade, tourism, superyachts and manufacturing, along with the 2014 Club Marine Australian Marine Industry Export & Superyacht Awards to be announced at a gala dinner on Tuesday 20 May.

Invest in your business and register now at www.aimex.asn.au/events/asmex-conference

We have the latest launches, innovations in technology and composites, some sponsorship news and opportunities from the world of sailing.

Along with the official description of the themes and mood of the event, we have some insight from the recent China (Shanghai) International Boat Show from the frequent flyer and our friend, Leigh Francis who was so impressed with the calibre of exhibitors and trade visitors he has vowed to make the show a 'must-do' on his very full boat show calendar.

Leigh and the All Marine Spares team will be cutting a swathe at Sanctuary Cove with their custom-designed and built trailer - a first for Australia - before doing the rounds of other national events to meet clients and suppliers. You won't miss it!

A delegation of Australian companies with AIMEX too, taking advantage of 'Australia Week in China' which overlapped the Shanghai event, found the show full of quality prospects this year, rather than the 'tyre kickers' prevalent in recent years. With the addition of a leisure section and theme, the show has tapped into the growing Chinese interest in outdoor leisure.

Loads more, each and every day, so drop by frequently!

The appeal of offshore
Is there still appeal? Have we made it too onerous? Why would someone take it up now? I had been pondering. Yes. Marquee events have no issue attracting entrants. Middle Sea, Transpac, Cape to Rio, Fastnet, and Hobart all spring to mind instantly, but what of the ‘lesser' races? Lots of boats in pens (slips) a lot of the time
