Moticia - 50th Brisbane to Gladstone Multihull Yacht Race Update Julie Geldard
The 2014 50th Brisbane to Gladstone Yacht Race is well underway. The race commenced yesterday at 11:20 with Morticia winning the start. BOQ Team Australia then powered ahead and established an early lead over the fleet. They rounded the first mark in front with Morticia in second place. The positions remained the same as they rounded the second and third marks with Chillpill in third place.

BOQ Team Australia passed the leading mono Black Jack at about 3:30pm. As the rest of the fleet approached Bribie Island Bullet Proof caught Chillpill with Fantasia and Cut Snake close behind. Cut Snake could have been ahead of them all if they had not missed a navigational mark and had to go back round it. Boss Racing then joined these group of four yachts as they approached Caloundra.

As they approached Mooloolaba Chillpill headed off shore and let the other four boats get away. By the time they got to Coolum they had caught Bullet Proof and by Noosa were in third place. Positions changed as they reduced the gap to Morticia in second place. During the night this group of yachts got within 2nm of Morticia.

BOQ Team Australia continued to steam ahead, as they passed Indian Head they continued head offshore. This let the leading mono reduce the gap to almost even. As they rounded Breaksea Spit BOQ Team Australia’s superior boat speed saw them extend the lead again. They are expected to arrive around 5pm today. The remainder of the fleet are at the top of Fraser and will arrive Sunday.
