A match race has developed between two of the favourites in the Mount Gay 40th Gosford to Lord Howe Island Yacht Race.

Sydney to Hobart winner Victoire and the defending title holder of the G2LHI Race Frantic are one - two overall this morning as the yachts make their way across the Southern Tasman Sea.

The pair have taken a course south of the VO70 Southern Excellence II and appear to be in fresher winds, putting both ahead of the larger line honours favourite.

The leaders have fallen of the race record pace this morning, but the breeze is expected to freshen from the south during the day.

Midnight Rambler continues to perform consistently and is currently third on IRC, with Exile fourth.

The smallest boat in the fleet the Sydney 36 Local Hero is hugging the rhumb line and is just out of the placings, whilst Sydney 38 The Goat has gone furthest south looking for the stronger breeze.
