Yacht of the Week- Kokomo III - and she could be yours

by Lee Mylchreest on 31 Mar 2014
Kokomo III at anchor SW
She was designed by Dubois and manufactured in New Zealand by Alloy Yachts, launched in 2010. She is just 58m in length, she is one of the finest fly bridge sailing sloops in the world and she could be yours for just GBP40m (or around USD66m). She is Kokomo III. If you sail on her, you won't want to take a crowd as she can accommodate just 10 guests.

She is actually the third superyacht from Alloy Yachts that has been built for the same experienced yacht owner and she is the largest. The first two were also called Kokomo - Kokomo I and Kokomo II.

Many ideas have developed and evolved from the first two Kokomo yachts, and this really does make her a beautiful performance-oriented yacht in every aspect - world class sailing, entertaining, enjoyment and comfort.

Kokomo is the ultimate in 'sleek'. She has a distinctively modern aspect not only because of the array of innovations and cutting edge technology. The stark white superstructure, glossy jet black hull and bright silver transom graphics give her a contemporary look. Then there's the carbon fibre furniture in stark contrast to her teak interior.

Sailing yacht Kokomo has several amazing firsts, including a submarine anchoring system, a 75 metre tall mast, a huge sail area, lifting ballast keel - which raises to 5 m for increased access and lowers to 8m for optimal sailing performance and sea keeping stability and comfort.

From a structural point of view, the lifting ballasted keel is a significant change for this Dubois design. The ‘tower’ comes up through the centre of the yacht, allowing the whole bulb of the keel to be raised and lowered, and changing the depth drawn from under 5m to over 8m. The construction process involved lowering the keel shaft down through the tower, then the bulb was attached underneath.

S/Y Kokomo has five cabins. The owners' suite is spacious and it spans the full beam at the aft of the yacht. It has a king size bed on the centreline, with a leather top desk to starboard and a leather top chest of drawers to port. The ensuite bathroom is situated up a couple of steps and behind the aft bulkhead.

Two identical double cabins are situated side by side and each have a queen size bed with a side settee that can be converted to an additional single bed. There are also a further two mirror-image cabins with twin single berths, each with an additional Pullman berth and ensuite bathroom.

Silk oatmeal carpets are soft and luxurious underfoot in the bedrooms. The bathrooms feature white marble and green glass finishes, with wood detailing.

Oh yes and you can have fun on board. She is equipped with two custom 6.1m Hamilton Jet tenders, a wakeboard, water skis, biscuits, donuts, sea kayaks(single person), standup paddle boards( fitted with wind surfing sails) suitable for beginner wind surfers, laser vago sailing dinghies, 2 man lasers with Main sail, jib and asymmetrical kite with retracting bow sprit, trapeze gear, 8 sets of dive gear, snorkelling gear for 10 guests and fishing gear.

She usually has a crew of ten as well as the ten guests, she can reach 16 knots in a pinch but her cruising speed is a comfortable 13.5 knots. Of course, you won't be able to tuck away into tiny anchorages with her 5m draft, but the other advantages might mean you just have to put up with it!
