Fitting finale to 470 Class Australian Championship
by Brian Case on 24 Feb 2014
Mat Belcher and Will Ryan in action Victor Kovalenko
After a week of fantastic winds, the final day started out with the wind gauge reading zero and glassy water. RO Peter Taylor put up the postponement flag while sailors were left to sit out their nervous energy.
Although the World Championship winning team of Matt Belcher and Will Ryan had locked away this Championship the day before and duly decided to take a well earned rest there was still a great contest for the remaining podium places and especially for the women's title.
Finally at 1.45 the breeze had settled to seven knots from a southerly direction and the fleet set sail for their final showdown. This one race would decide many things.
An individual recall was called on the Tom Klemmens/Will Llewelyn team who quickly returned and started correctly. A great battle was staged at the front between Galloway/Hannah and the Conway brothers but with the former being a bit too slick to take the points.
Carrie Smith and Sarah Cook sailed the later stages of this Championship very well to finish on equal points with Tasmanians Lucy Shephard and Emma Barton with Smith/Cook taking the title on a count back.
Unfortunately, the very competitive team of Jacqueline Gurr and Amelia Catt were forced to retire from the last two days of racing with injury.
Overall, this event was a great success with Sorrento Sailing and Couta Boat Club thoroughly enjoying the experience of having these high performance class visit their shores. Having Victor Kovalenko talking to members for a week was an added bonus and fantastic experiences were had.
