Whangarei to Noumea Race Reunion - 50 years on

by Dave Cochran on 6 Feb 2014
Tarua in full sail Whangarei to Noumea Race 1964. Designed by Herreschoff, and sailed by Brian O’Donoghue, the 36fter finished first overall and was fourth boat home.. SW
Fifty years ago, on the 18th of April 1964, the Onerahi Yacht Club held it’s inaugural Whangarei to Noumea Yacht Race.

On the 26th of April this year we will celebrate this event, and the seven others that followed through to 1984, with an afternoon gathering at the OYC Clubrooms at Onerahi.

There will be lots of clippings and photos, memories and memorabilia, gossip and nostalgia.

Did you, or someone you know, participate in any of these great races?

As many of those that were involved will not necessarily be still actively sailing, we are keen to spread the word far and wide to give as many people as possible the opportunity to come along and reminisce.

Please pass this information on to anyone you think may wish to be involved.

We cannot undertake to contact sailors direct, we have to rely on the ‘grapevine’ to do the work.

Already we have had contacts from southern NZ and Australia. It should be a lot of fun.

We will be putting more details as they unfold on our club website www.oyc.org.nz, but we can be contacted through the organisers as follows;
