Lighthouses are very special places for sailors. Not only are they elegant decorations to the points and capes of a coastline, they can be confirmation of successful navigation, warning against danger, or the welcome home light at the end of an ocean crossing.
The fascination of lighthouses, though, is only enhanced by the sometimes extraordinary weather conditions they survive, as recently during the so-called polar vortex that has descended on North America this week.
Constantly drenched in water from the huge seas and beset by freezing temperatures, they present more like mythical towers in a strange land rather than the lighthouses we know they are:
