ASBA Nationals 2014 - On the Downhill Run!!

by Darren Spence on 5 Jan 2014
Fang and Fizz - ASBA National Championships 2014 Teri Dodds http://www.teridodds.com
Day three of racing at the ASBA Sports Boat National Titles was a 'breeze on' day. With four races scheduled and four races complete to date, day three is the make or break day. Cream rising to the top day?

In the end only three races where completed with the Fremantle Doctor putting his feet up early for the weekend and reaching 27 – 30 knots by mid afternoon.

At the end of day two, Crank (Brett Whitbread) from Brisbane, held a narrow lead in the points over local boats Octopussy (Rees Howell) and Fang (Tim Reger). These three boats have been the most consistent despite some gear breakage in the passage race on day two and this proved to be the case again in rig stretching 20-25 knots over the Fremantle Sailing Club course.

In the first race of the day, Fang took the overall SMS win by 6 seconds from Crank with another 27 seconds to Octopussy. The pre-race generated the first nomination for 'Stuff up of the Day' when the Crank crew hoisted the jib without attaching the halyard. Quickly fixed but captured on film.

Race two on the day saw the winner of the passage race yesterday, Don’t Forget Alice (Rod Beurteaux), take the overall win by 8 seconds again to Crank with Octopussy third and searching for the 3 seconds they where done by. Fang scored a fifth with Division 2 leader, The Duck Nuts, missing out on the podium by 5 seconds. Yes, the racing was close.

What turned out to be the final race of the day, saw Fang grab their second win of the day and the series, leading home Tachyon (Andrew York) from Sydney and Don’t Forget Alice. Crank, Octopussy and The Ducks Nuts taking out the next three positions with all these crews showing off their heavy air sailing skill.

Day four of sailing is the last day of the Titles and sees a tie at the top of the leader board for the overall honors. Fang and Crank are equal on points with three races now scheduled for the day to wrap up the series. Octopussy is further seven points adrift and will need some bullets today to have any chance of overhauling the two leaders.

In Division 1, Fang holds a one point break on Crank to Octopussy. Division 2 has been dominated by The Ducks Nuts who have taken out every race in the division while also holding down fifth in the overall points.

Fang also holds lead in the Viper 640 division.

Many thanks to our sponsors – Karver, Sail Force International, Gill, Hogs Breath Cafe and 3 Oceans Winery for their support of this event and the ASBA fleet.
