Windsurfers aiming for speed record

by Courtesy Editor - ISAF on 4 Dec 2003 On a one kilometre stretch of canal in the South of France, a number of windsurfers have gathered. They have two aims. The first is to bring the ultimate speed record over 500 metres back into windsurfing, and the second is to break the 50 knot barrier.

At present the Australian hydrofoil, Yellow Pages, holds the record at 46.52 knots, a record she achieved in 1993.

The forecast today is ripe for that record to be broken, with perfect direction and the potential strength for a worthwhile bid. The current fastest speed for the event is held by Finian MAYNARD at 45.22 knots.

The forecast calls for 25 knots ESE in the morning building quickly to 35 knots at midday. From there we can expect anything between 35 and 60 knots. The entire coastline should get force 8-9 sustained winds with gusts up to force 12!.

The ultimate day might be upon us with the perfect direction and strong wind.
