Chase the Caribbean Sailing Regattas in Spring 2014

by Kathy Cannon on 5 Dec 2013
Caribbean Sailing Regattas Kathy Cannon
Spring 2014 is chock full of yacht racing thrills. Watching a televised race can be a nail-biting experience as millions experienced the Oracle's crew climb back on top during 2013's America's Cup. Even if you did not know anything about sail racing, you were likely caught up in the spectacle.

The Caribbean will offer up many opportunities from March through May to once again be awed by the near-collision passes and amazing athleticism of the crews. Here are our favorites:

• St. Maarten Heineken Regatta (March 6-9)
• St. Barths Bucket (March 27-30)
• Antigua Classic Yacht Regatta (April 17-22)
• Antigua Sailing Week (April 26 – May 2)

Boats of all sizes and build from around the world will converge on the azure waters to compete for prizes and bragging rights. The only thing that is perhaps more intriguing are the accompanying parties. These are not just any parties. For example, a full-on international music festival is held on Kim Sha beach during the St. Maarten Heineken Regatta. The closing party is not to be missed as popular musical acts from around the world entertain into the wee hours of the morning. Read more about these sailing competitions turned party central here.

Want to get in on the action? Set your sails for one of these sailing spectaculars? Not a sailor? A crewed yacht charter is just the ticket to get you in the thick of the action and in on the best parties. The newest Caribbean yacht charter is Lady Katlo, a 62-foot luxury catamaran, refitted in late 2013. Lady Katlo will be hosting private yacht charters to attend all of the regattas. If you find she is booked, you have the option to charter Katlo, a 45-foot catamaran, for the festivities.

Lady Katlo offers luxury sailing vacations the Caribbean, Bahamas, and US East Coast. For more information about this yacht, visit http://www.ladykatlo.com.

Grabbing chances with both hands
Can bad weather actually lead to more sailing? There's been no getting away from the fact that it's been a pretty miserable start to 2024 weather-wise in the UK. February saw record rainfall (yes, I know we're famed for our rain over here), it's been seriously windy and generally chilly.

It was nice to tick all that off in one day.” Kevin Shoebridge on ETNZ's Day 1 Splash and Sail We thought, 'We've got a bit of time. We'll pull the mainsail up'. Then we ended up going for a sail [and fitting in three dry foiling tacks]. It was nice to tick all that off in one day.” Kevin Shoebridge on ETNZ's Day 1 Splash and Sail.
