Storm creates yacht havoc in Thailand's Phuket

by Jeff Zika/Sail-World Cruising on 29 Nov 2013
Ao Yon 8 SW
As leisure sailors, we all like to think that, while the ocean is not our friend, we can overcome its wildest of rages if we display good seamanship. But that's at sea. Recently Chalong Bay, Phuket, Thailand, experienced a major storm which the best seamanship in the world couldn't prevent from heart-breaking, destructive damage to some of the finest of yachts.

Last week local authorities ordered Phuket Rassada Port closed as strong wind and waves lashed the coast and driving rain wreaked havoc.

Meanwhile, yachts moored in the bay at Ao Yon, further north on Phuket's east coast, were grounded as the storm took hold. Wind gusting up to 40kts and waves of up to four meters high battered the coast - broken boats, broken dreams.

Photographer Jeff (Jaz) Zika, of https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=466059883504149&set=a.466059820170822.1073741840.277665769010229&type=3&theater!Jazcam_Aerial_Photography was on hand to photograph the carnage.
