Congratulations to the 24th Galway Sea Scouts on claiming victory in the ISA Powerboat Challenge for a second year. The event took place on Galway Bay and around the Galway Docks last Saturday the 19th of October. Host club Galway City Sailing Club ran a well-orchestrated event on the water and organised an excellent prize giving ceremony in the local Harbour Hotel.

This year’s event raised the challenge for the competitors by making all tasks on the water exercises that included rescuing capsized dinghies, canoes and lee shore rescues. A total of six teams made it through to the final where Galway Sea Scouts came in just ahead of Galway Bay Sailing Club.

The winning team consisted of:

Team Manager - Alan Delahunty
Team Coach - Caran Oliver and Graham Daly
Team - Fionn Delahunty, Ciaran Jordan, Eamonn Murphy and Róisín Jordan

A special note of commendation should go to Bellacragher Boat Club from Mulranny in Co. Mayo, who have been the only team to have competed in every Powerboat Challenge to date – next year may be their year to win! Check out their YouTube Video of the Challenge here.

A new award created for this year was 'Best Helm' to acknowledging the finest display of good seamanship skill, teamwork and helmsmanship of the rescue boat. The award was won by James Rattigan from Galway City Sailing Club.

The ISA would like to thank all the competitors, families and friends for making it a great day, GCSC for being so welcoming and great hosts, all the judges for their professionalism and support, Stephen Taylor from the Irish Powerboat Racing Club for sponsoring of the trophies and Pierce Purcell from the ISA Board of Directors for attending the prize giving.

We look forward to next year’s competition and for more details on the event and what to start training click here.
