Product Review – Berkley Squiddo + Video

by Jarrod Day on 28 Sep 2013
The Berkley Squiddo in all its glory. Jarrod Day
Around six years ago, the introduction of Octo jigs into the Australian fishing market set a new precedence for anglers in search of reef species right around the country. Simple in design, Octo jigs incorporate a lead weighted head, a soft rubber or silicon skirt and a twin set of small forged hooks which are attached to a short length of Kevlar leader. Octo jigs became ever so popular when they were used for deep dropping to reefs for snapper and the like. Anglers around the country accepted this technique with vigor as the results were outstanding.

Today, this fishing technique is still as popular as ever with Octo jigs finding themselves as a 'must have' lure in the tackle boxes of many offshore anglers.

From brand to brand they differ slightly but all in all achieve the same result, a big hungry reef fish.

What is best about the use of Octo jigs is that the technique to use them is very simple which appeals to anglers of all levels of experience.

For the sports fisho wanting to cast and retrieve the jig, they work exceptionally well or on the other hand, an old salty that likes to use baits but tinkers occasionally with lures, they can be used. One of the easiest methods to use Octo jigs is actually when at anchor. They can be sent to the bottom and lifted a few feet from the reef. With the rod and reel placed in the rod holder, the rocking motion of the boat will cause the jig to lift up and down in the water column. This will enable the jig to act like a swimming octopus or squid which is very appealing to all reef species.

Just when we thought Octo jigs couldn’t evolve, they have. Well known tackle manufacture Berkley have released the newest Octo jig into the market, the Squiddo. The Squiddo is a very unique jig with similar traits to its Octo cousins. A newly designed torpedo shaped head improves the sink rate for deep water fishing applications.

The Squiddo incorporates a small stainless steel Owner corkscrew inside the silicon skirt. This allows anglers to place a Berkley Gulp soft plastic onto the jig to enhance its effectiveness.

Anglers right around the globe are already familiar with the huge success of Berkley Gulp soft plastics purely due to their scent, biodegradable and lifelike characteristics. Being able to screw them into an Octo jig will make this lure more deadly than any current lure on the market.

There is a saying in the tackle world that lures are made to catch fishermen and not fish but in the case of the Berkley Squiddo, this is further from the truth.

If its fish you want, then this lure is one you’ll want tied to the end of your leader the next time you’re heading out into the big blue.
