WWA Wake Park Worlds - Ange Schriber sets her eyes on repeat + Video

by The World Wakeboard Association on 24 Sep 2013 Last year's Pro Women’s and Pro Women’s Features Only world champion, Ange Schriber, has her eye set on a repeat as she enters the 2013 WWA Wake Park World Championships hosted by Al Forsan International Sports Resort. Earlier in the year, Ange decided to make a carrier move and spend her first full summer in the US, and it shows in her riding as well.

In an era when women’s cable riders are throwing Frontside 720s, pressing out rails, and boosting huge transfers, Ange Schriber hasn’t only maintained the high caliber of progression, but she’s pushed other female riders to join her on the progression super-highway.

WWA: Hey Ange, You’ve got a pretty interesting life, fill the fans in on your background.

Angelika Schriber: My dad was the one that introduced me to wakeboarding when we went to America for waterskiing, I started waterskiing at the age of 5 ½ and started representing my country traveling and competing around the world where I gained my SA Colors (South African Colors) and broke records in three event skiing after my waterskiing career I then transitioned into wakeboarding behind the boat and gained the junior world title in 2005. End of 2005 we moved to Cairns, Australia where I still continued to ride behind the boat and compete in the Pro Tours. I would go down to Cable Ski Cairns on a weekly basis to improve my boat riding and unfortunately had to sell our boat and this is where I started to ride Cable. I have been traveling the world on the Professional circuit for four years being on the road for eight months of the year. Its been a fantastic fun journey being able to pursue a career that you love and a career that allows you to tour the world and explore so many cultures and traditions.

WWA: So your originally rode behind the boat, do you ever get a chance to get back out behind the boat?

Ange: Unfortunately, I never get time to go behind a boat. I would love to try next season and try and get some time riding, as I really loved riding boat when I started wakeboarding.

WWA: You won both the Pro Women’s and Pro Women’s Features Only divisions at the 2012 WWA Wake Park World Championships; How have those two wins influenced your life for the 2013 season so far?

Ange: Winning both those competitions definitely gave me the confidence in knowing that if you work hard it really pays off, and those two wins definitely influenced me for this season in making sure I am always working hard and learning new things along the way. I am so ready for the season ahead.

WWA: What influences you to continue to progress your riding?

Ange: I would say just the love of the sport, it makes me happy wakeboarding everyday and the fact that its always different and you never get board learning new tricks and exploring different avenues makes it fun and exciting.

WWA: How has the 2013 season been so far?

Ange: It’s been really good, I’m happy on how it’s gone so far. I’ve been having a lot of double wins this year, which is always good, and being nominated for Transworld wake awards again this year made me happy. I’m also happy to be apart of the female wake movie 'Sets in Motion' where It showcases the progression of female wakeboarding and to get the opening section was really something I wanted as it shows the audience that I worked hard and laid some of the tricks I can do down This year isn’t over yet and I look forward to the rest of the WWA (Wake Park) World Series stops.

WWA: We hear that you’ve moved from Australia to Texas for the summer. Is this year the first 'Never-Winter' season that you’ve had and how has this helped your riding?

Ange: It’s taken me three years to finally move to America. It’s been such a rad summer being here in Texas with Matty as there are a lot of cable parks I get to explore and progress at. Matty Hasler and I were Tom Foshee roommates for the summer, which is rad. Thanks Tom. We really had such a great summer living in New Braunfels. We got to ride TSR a lot and always drove up to BSR in Waco. Matty and I road tripped everywhere this year which was definitely a fun experience. Definitely riding all the parks in Texas progressed my riding this summer for sure and I can’t wait to come back next year.

WWA: What has been your favorite trip this year and why?

Ange: My Favorite trip is definitely BSR. It’s such an amazing place where you can hang out for a week and be content with life and have no worries. The Cable Park, the staff and all its activities make it so much fun to just chill out in the wilderness.

WWA: What is your mindset coming into the 2013 Wake Park World Championships?

Ange: I definitely know that I have to lay the tricks down and it’s game on. My mindset into the Wake Park Worlds is to be aggressive and go for it-No holding back. I definitely would like to of course win both titles again like last year. That is definitely my ultimate goal and if I can make this happen I will be on top of the moon with joy.

WWA: Where is you’re favorite place to wakeboard?

Ange: When I am back in Australia, Cairns Wake Park is fun. Definitely my ultimate place to ride is Thai Wake Park, as all the pros are there to ride with. When I am in America, BSR Cable Park at the moment is my favorite place to ride but there is definitely more to explore.

WWA: What rider will you be most prepared to compete against?

Ange: It’s always a tough question as all the girls definitely put the pressure on. I’m not really sure.

WWA: Any particular person that you’ll have your eyes set on to beat in the karting race?

Ange: Courtney Angus

WWA: What else do you do for fun besides wakeboard?

Ange: I love to hang out at the beach and surf and explore different countries
