Phoenix holds off Challenge and Chutzpah to win race one. - Morris Finance Sydney 38 Short Course Regatta 2013 Teri Dodds http://www.teridodds.com
The weekend event of the Morris Finance Sydney 38 Short Course Regatta commenced on the waters of Corio Bay in Geelong yesterday in light and shifty conditions. The fleet of ten, were held in a long postponement until the wind settled and got underway just after midday.

After three races, local boat Phoenix leads the series so far with two wins (race one and three) and a fourth sitting on 6 points, with Lou Abrahams Challenge a close two points behind. Andrew Robinson’s Playground took out race two with a convincing win with Challenge and Sierra Chainsaw following them over the line.

Co-owner and skipper of Phoenix, Brenton Carnell was thrilled with the racing today – ‘It was exciting, the breeze was light and it seems to suit us, but it was really close.’ Having purchased Phoenix from Sydney, only three months ago, Brenton and wife Jen are really enjoying their boat and One Design racing, pulling together a crew, which have sailed with him for many years.

Victorian chapter organiser Rowan Simpson, who is a regular on Challenge added – ‘Clearly the boat of the day was Phoenix’ adding jokingly ‘ I shouldn’t have told Brenton and Jen that was the boat to buy, clearly that was a mistake, no they had a great day and congratulations to them.’

There are four races scheduled for today, with similar conditions expected.
