Maine's windjammers celebrated- Camden Windjammer Festival.

by Des Ryan on 1 Sep 2013
Windjammers - nothing more breathtaking SW
The State of Maine in the USA has long been known as the home of the graceful windjammer. Once again this year, their historic fleet of windjammers is being celebrated at the annual Camden Windjammer Festival.

The festival kicks off Friday with the arrival of 15 windjammers, a dinner auction, music and a fireworks celebration over Camden Harbor. It continues Saturday and Sunday with boat parades, music, food and maritime exhibits and demonstrations.

The windjammers will make a fantastic sight arriving during Friday afternoon - a spectacle not to be missed. On shore they will be welcomed by the Maritime Heritage Fair, with booths and displays of maritime history, traditions and skills.

In the evening there is a dinner on one of the boats, with fireworks over the harbour to lend a celebratory air to the proceedings.

On Saturday you can enjoy a pancake breakfast on the wharf, then watch the competitors in the 'build-a-boat' competition (or join it if you will).

The Camden Fire Department will put on demonstrations, with other fun competitor events during the morning for adults and children alike.

Some drama will be added to the proceedings when storyteller Richard Cornelia gives and illustrated talk on 'The True Story of the Mutiny on the Bounty'.

You can watch how a lobster is caught, hear about diving for treasure and bid for the paintings which will be created new throughout the day.

You can even apply to be a pirate - they'll be recruiting! This is only the beginning for a great, fun-filled celebration of the sailing history and heritage of the region

Festival organizers say thousands of people attend each year to celebrate Camden's maritime heritage from the age when majestic schooners were launched in Camden to today when elegant modern-day sailing yachts visit port.
