Finn Gold Cup - Patience pays off on day 2

by Canadian Sailing Team on 28 Aug 2013
Finn world day 2 Canadian Sailing Team
Today, it was another test of patience, foresight and a little pace mixed in with some self made fortune. Many of the first days victors found the Finn Gold Cup sledding extraordinarily difficult today and put up scores that brought them back to earth.

Testimony to the difficulty of the competition to date can be found up and down the scorecard with the likes of Ed Wright (GBR, 2013 European Champion) stumbling today after a quality day one, or Pieter Jan Postma of the Netherlands, a fleet stalwart, putting up a 45 and a 36 after a 1, 2 yesterday.

After a two hour postponement sailors went out for what appeared to be ground hog day. Coach Ken Dool explains, 'Ultimately we raced in four to eight knots of wind with approximately 20 degrees of variance in direction. Both pressure and angle was vital but ultimately it was the pressure that was king for the day.' Fortunately on the Canuck side, Greg Douglas posted an 8, 14 on the day vaulting himself up the leader board to 13th overall.

The remainder of the Canadian squad had their highs and lows, with Jeff Roney passing in the neighbourhood of 30 boats on the days final beat to round the final weather mark in 28th, ultimately finishing 30th in Race four. 'This is by far his best score and a positive reminder that everyone is in the hunt until the hunt is officially declared over. Martin Robitaille had a hard ride on the day and looks to rebound tomorrow.'

Tomorrow looks to be more of the same with a little rain thrown in for good measure before some additional velocity returns later in the week. More to come as the epic Finn adventure unfolds in Event website
