RNZYS Winter Series- Chinese gybe snaps spinnaker pole - Video

by Colin Preston on 21 Aug 2013
Chinese gybe on Charmonet - RNZYS Winter Series August 2013 Colin Preston

A solid breeze on Saturdays race developed a 30 knot gust soon after rounding the top mark resulting in some damage to a few boats losing control under spinnaker.

A remote controlled mast mounted AEE Action camera captured this Chinese gybe followed by a broken spinnaker pole on board Charmonet. The spinnaker was recovered intact and no crew were seriously hurt enabling us to continue the race and finish under gennaker.

However post race we learnt that our sister ship Outrageous Fortune also had a major incident with owner Quintin Fowler being hit in the head by their spinnaker pole and their bowman injuring a finger with both injuries requiring stitches. During the incident they lost their spinnaker overboard with its retrieval not possible.

With the results showing that six other boats retired from the race we figured we got away lightly.
