The NZL Yachting Trust New Zealand Optimist Team report in from Lake Garda, Italy, venue for the 2013 Optimist Worlds:
Hi all,
Apologies for the late update of Day 5 (of the Fleet racing)
The fifth day of the 2013 Opti Worlds has been a better overall day for the NZL International Yachting Trust Optimist Worlds Team.
The day dawned clear and hot, around 25 degrees at 8.00am, after overnight rain and predictions it would take a while for the Ora breeze to fill in came true. After about one hour's delay the boats were sent out and we were treated to a steadily building breeze that reached 25knots by the start of the first flight.
Nick Egnot-Johnson had a very solid start and mixed it with the top 5 for much of his race, finishing in 8th - his best placing so far. Next flight had Leonard Takahashi-Fry, Alastair Gifford and Tom Fyfe and with the breeze still in Alastair made the most of it and took out 6th place also giving him his best result of the regatta. Leonard had another great start but went left which was favoured in the previous flight but the breeze was lighter this time around and he came in in 25th. Tom was unlucky on the start line and had a deep start which made it hard to get back into the race.
The final flight of race 8 had Henry Haslett and he took his opportunity early and had a good start and upwind to also produce his best result of the regatta finishing in 12th..
The thunder clouds then rolled in and the second race of the day got underway in light winds and only one flight was raced (no Kiwis were in this flight) before the sailors were sent in and the breeze died out completely. So we are now down two races with little chance of making these up, though there will be an early start on the final day and we now have two Kiwis, Leonard and Nick in the top 100 and all others with a good chance of also making it with a continuation of some good results..
