Gov Cup - RNZYS and RFBYC Teams tie for first

by Nancy Mellon on 20 Jul 2013 At the Gov Cup, eExperience has paid off for Sam Gilmour and Chris Steele as they end up at the top of the leader board. This was the day when the three teams with no losses had to race against each other. The first to be defeated was the home team from Balboa Yacht Club.

They won their first race of the day but then they lost to Chris Steele’s team from Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron in the ninth round. In round 11, the last round, Chris Steele lost for the first time since arriving. Royal Freshwater Bay Yacht Club, with Sam Gilmour at the helm was victorious in that round. In the tenth round RFBYC lost to BYC. The standings at the end of the day are listed below. RFBYC and RNZYS are tied for first with 10 wins each and only one loss. The host team is close behind – having lost only to the two top teams.

Day two brought south west winds of eight to 13 knots at noon with a temperature in the low 70’s. There was heavy chop when the racers were towed out at noon. Racing went smoothly making it possible to complete the Round Robin.

The top eight will have one final race series today. It is the first of the quarter finals. Tomorrow they will continue the quarter finals. The other four teams will have a consolation round to decide their finishing places. They are the teams from Newport Harbor Yacht Club, Portland Yacht Club, Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron’s girls team and Royal Prince Alfred Yacht Club.

The teams came in early today to give the racers an opportunity to be a part of the Beer Cans big sailboat racing in the harbor. The Beer Cans are a long standing tradition at BYC. The boats are keel boats with large crews that race throughout the beautiful Newport Harbor. They must leave their spinnakers below to keep their speeds down. It is quite a sight to see the many sails traveling through the harbor. Typically there are thirty big boats involved. After racing, they enjoy BYC’s buffet and entertainment.

The colors on the spinnakers for each team can be seen as they come down wind. The boat number changes each day as the boats are rotated so each team has a different boat for each day of racing. Those numbers are available on the website.

The Governor’s Cup Committee and the Balboa Yacht Club wish to extend their heartfelt gratitude to all those who have contributed to one of the major sailing events of the year that shapes young people into premier sailors of the future.
