The Sail Canada U17 Western Regional Championship, with thanks to Host Organization Volunteers chaired by Cindy Meers and Commodore Dave Mills, got underway on July 11th at the Newell Sailing Club near Brooks Alberta.

82 boats registered ... 97 sailors with coaches and family members from Manitoba, BC, Saskatchewan and the home province – sailing Laser Radials, Optimist Dinghies, Lasers, 29ers, Fireballs, and an Open class to make up the Western Canadian Championship.

Thursday and Friday saw the event participants out training under the leadership of Alberta Sailing with a strong coaching team keeping the sailors safe and happy through Thursday’s breezy session (25 knots!) and Friday’s session and practice race. Many thanks to:

Kelsey Stroppel (AB) - Lead Coach with the Opti fleets
Ian Elliot (AB)
Kyle Ross (MB)
Stu McLaren (MB)
Brigitte Smutny (Manitoba Sailing)
Mark Lammens (Sask Sailing)
Ken Dool (Sail Canada High Performance Director)

Racing Saturday and Sunday had most fleets getting in 10 races. Three courses were lead by Principle Race Officer John Culter and NSC's expert Race Officers, with Mike Turner as Chief Judge for the event.
