Youth Sailing World Championship - US youth team heads to Cyprus

by Dana Paxton on 9 Jul 2013 International Sailing Federation (ISAF) Youth Sailing World Championship - This week US Sailing’s 2013 Youth Worlds Team travels to Limassol, Cyprus to represent the United States. Scheduled for July 11-20, the regatta is known as the world’s leading youth sailing event.

'The ISAF Youth Worlds is the primary goal for competitive U.S. sailors under the age of 19,' Josh Adams, Managing Director of U.S. Olympic Sailing. 'The group of 12 talented sailors representing US Sailing's Youth Worlds Team is ready to face the world's best youth sailors.'

US Sailing’s 2013 Youth Worlds Team
•Laser Radial (boy’s one person dinghy): Addison Hackstaff (St. Petersburg, Fla.)
•Laser Radial (girl’s one person dinghy): Haddon Hughes (Houston, Texas)
•International 420 (boy’s two person dinghy): Wade Waddell (Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.) and Henry Fernberger (New York, N.Y.)
•International 420 (girl’s two person dinghy): Casey Klingler (Larchmont, N.Y.) and Fiona Walsh (Rye, N.Y.)
•29er (open high performance dinghy): Quinn Wilson (Ojai, Calif.) and Dane Wilson (Ojai, Calif.)
•RS:X Boys: Maximo Nores (Miami, Fla.)
•RS:X Girls: Marion Lepert (Belmont, Calif.)
•Multihull: Ravi Parent (Bradenton, Fla.) and Sam Armington (Sarasota, Fla.)

While most of the 2013 Team will make their debut in Cyprus, three are returning members: brothers Quinn and Dane Wilson, who finished fourth in 2012, and Sam Armington. 'It’s really exciting to be able to compete again,' said Armington, who sailed in 2012 with a different skipper and finished eighth overall. '2012 was an awesome experience and I met a bunch of great sailors and coaches.'

An important stop in the journey of an Olympic-hopeful, ISAF Youth Worlds alumni include: Paige Railey (Clearwater, Fla.), a US Sailing Team Sperry Top-Sider athlete, 2012 Olympian and two-time Youth World champion (’03, ’05) in the Laser Radial; Zach Brown (San Diego, Calif.), a US Sailing Team Sperry Top-Sider athlete and two-time Youth Worlds team member; and Andrew Campbell (San Diego, Calif.), 2008 Olympian and Youth World champion (’02) in the Laser. Brown and Campbell will serve as team coaches in Cyprus.

Meet the Coaches
Andrew Campbell was a member of the 2008 Olympic Team in the Laser, and a member of the US Sailing Team in the Laser and Star classes (2001-2011). His career highlights include a gold medal at the 2007 Pan American Games (Laser); gold medal at the 2005 World University Games; and a gold medal at the ISAF Youth World Championship (Laser). He is the 2006 College Sailor of the Year and a four-time All American at Georgetown University. Andrew is a professional sailor and coach, and the director of the CISA Advanced Racing Clinic held annually in Long Beach, Calif.

Zach Brown is a member of the 2013 US Sailing Team Sperry Top-Sider in the 49er class and is campaigning with Fred Strammer for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games. His sailing career highlights include wins at the 2001 Pram Nationals (Sabot), 2003 U.S. Youth Champs (420), 2004 ISSA High School Nationals (A division), and a two-time member of the U.S. Youth Worlds Team (’03, ’04). He was a four-time All American at Yale University.

The regatta
The 2013 Sail First ISAF Youth Sailing World Championship begins with two days of registration, equipment allocation, training and an opening ceremony on July 14.
