Youth Olympics Byte CII now in Australia with Demo Program

by John Curnow & Byte CII Media on 30 Jun 2013 The Byte CII is a fast and fun singlehanded one-design dinghy, it’s an ISAF International class picked for the Youth Olympic Games 2014.

The typical crew weight for the Byte CII is between 40 and 65kg, so it’s the perfect boat between the Optimist and Laser classes, because it allows lightweight sailors to master the dynamic sailing style needed for success in the Laser class and beyond. The CII’s Carbon, II (two) piece mast and fully battened Mylar sail are self-depowering.

Tom Rosaman from Performance Sailcraft Australia (PSA) commented this week, 'We are very excited to now be able to offer the Byte CII. Boats are already being sailed in South Australia, Victoria, NSW and Queensland and our demonstration program will give interested sailors the chance to take a Byte and get a taste for what the boat is really about.

The Byte CII 2013 World Championships, will be sailed out of the Newport Sailing Center in Rhode Island, USA from August 24 to 28, 2013.

. With a lightweight hull and the flexy rig, junior sailors coming from Optimists can learn proper dinghy techniques, without having to wait for their weight to increase to allow them to be able to move the craft around dynamically and it’s an ideal boat for lightweight women sailors of course.

As the International Byte CII is the chosen dinghy for the 2014 Youth Olympic Games in Nanjing China and the 2013 Byte CII World Championship is a Youth Olympics qualifier and also an open event, some 15 or so countries will be represented and with the momentum that is growing daily, it could well be more.

Newport Sailing Center´s Anderson Reggio, the son of the very famous PRO, Peter ‘Luigi’ Reggio, will be the PRO for the 2013 Byte CII World Championship. 'We are located at Fort Adams State Park in Newport and our public sailing centre has been in operation since 1983. Importantly, we not only instruct around 700 children every season, but roughly the same number of adults too.'

'We actually have an entire department devoted solely to the management of regattas, which has allowed us to run many a successful event over the years and there are quite a number coming up this year too, based on the success of the America’s Cup World Series we ran last year. Three World Championships are coming through this season, plus two North American Championships, along with our normal schedule, which totals 16 different regattas for our 2013 calendar.'

With such a wonderful pedigree for both the PRO and location alike, the planning has allowed for some great racing to be conducted. 'The Byte CII racecourse will be predominantly windward/leeward and we may get a trapezoid course in there as well, but the main aim is to have the fleet as close in to shore as possible and maximise the spectator’s view.'

'We are really lucky to have the Bay here, where multiple racing locations are available and all a just a short sail from the sailing centre. Late August typically has a standard Newport sea breeze, which might have a fading Northerly in the morning, but that’s going to be dominated, by the 10-15knot Sou ‘west sea breeze, which arrives at 1200hrs, if not a little earlier. Racing tends to start at 1100hrs, knowing that you can sometimes get a sea breeze that can build a little earlier than usual up the Bay.

Predominantly it will be fairly flat water with a North to South running tidal situation in the Bay, but as it doesn’t usually counteract with the wind so much, you don’t end up getting a steep chop', said Anderson.

Now the area has run many a Laser event and 2013 is to be no different, with Sail Newport, the New England Laser Masters being conducted on the same course area. In October, the New York Yacht Club will run the North American Laser Masters in these waters, as well.

In terms of Youth Olympic Games qualifiers, after the 2013 Worlds, there will be these events:

• Asia – the very picturesque Langkawi Island, Malaysia from February 9 to 14 2014.
• North America – US Sailing Center, Martin County located in Jensen Beach, Florida from February 27 to March 2, 2014.
• South America – Brazil, YCSA Yacht Club St Amaro, Sao Paulo March 1 to 4, 2014
• Europe and Africa – Riva, Italy from April 21 to 27, 2014
• Australasia – dates and locations to be announced in the next week
