Georges River Nationals launch announced

by Harry Fisher on 27 Jun 2013 The 2014/15 Sharpie National Championships will be hosted by the Georges River Sailing Club on Botany Bay, Sydney the New South Wales Sharpie Association has announced.

The event will run from December 28th 2014 through to January 5th 2015 and it will be the first time in 25 years that a Sharpie Nationals will be held in Sydney.

The 2013/14 nationals will be held at Mounts Bay Sailing Club in Perth at the end of this year, which will no doubt follow on from Adelaide with a competitive fleet.

After the 66-boat fleet at the 70th Sharpie Nationals last summer in Adelaide it is a great time to start campaigning the Sharpie, as these fleet numbers will most likely be replicated at Mounts Bay and Georges River.

The class has shown a huge resurgence over the last few years with a strong influx of juniors in both skippering and crewing positions strengthening the core of the fleet.

Commodore and PRO Andrew McLachlan has a world class team behind him to provide great courses and race management on some of New South Wales’ most pristine sailing water.

The Australian Sharpie class offers some of the best bang for your buck sailing in the world, with competitive boats starting at very low prices and a social scene that is second to none.

CEO of Georges River Sailing Club Christine Bryant has heavily embraced the Sharpie Associations plans and intends to provide a social program that will blow you away.

The social events of the carnival will include the Legend’s Lunch and Ladies Day that were introduced at the Adelaide Nationals and were both huge successes as well as the States Night (Chug-A-Lug) and Presentation Evenings.

We are hopeful that the success of the Legends Lunch at the Adelaide Nationals can be replicated with the attendance of some of the greats of the Sharpie class within New South Wales.

New South Wales has a strong history in the Sharpies with class stalwarts such as Grant Simmer, Mark Bethwaite, Mark Peelgrane, Edgar Roe, Alex Dey, Stuart Sommerville, Rick Outhred and Rick Shortridge, who have all gone on to be successful at National and International level.

The New South Wales fleet has grown significantly in the past six seasons through the hard work of the association and now boasts one of the biggest fleets in the country.
