Bermuda One-Two - Kiwi Spirit claims Leg 2 Line Honors

On June 24th at 1049, Dr. Stanley Paris aboard Kiwi Spirit sailed across the finish line of the final leg of the 19th running of the Bermuda One-Two race. Winning line honors in both legs of this years’ race, Kiwi Spirit finished 6 hours and 39 minutes ahead of the next competitor as she glided in through the morning light air and patchy fog of Newport harbor.
The Bermuda One-Two is an annual sailing race that is comprised of two legs. The first, which is sailed singled handed, starts in Newport, RI and ends off of St. George’s Bermuda. After a few days, the fleet departs Bermuda and sails back to Newport, this time with two sailors aboard each boat.
On the return trip, Dr. Paris was accompanied by his son on Kiwi Spirit. Alan Paris, 49, an accomplished sailor in his own right, competed in the One-Two in 1995 and the Around-Alone race in 2002. Dr. Paris said, 'Boat racing aside, it’s a wonderful opportunity to spend time like that with my son, many parents never have that chance and I feel as though I am following in my son’s foot-steps.'
At 75, Dr. Paris is the oldest sailor to ever compete in the Bermuda One-Two. He chose this race as a primer for his non-stop around the world alone voyage that is scheduled to commence later this fall. Kiwi Spirit a Farr 63, built by Lyman-Morse Boat building of Thomaston, Maine, is expected to return to the yard for modifications following Paris’ next race, the Marblehead to Halifax race.
