Hear David Champtaloup in Cruising Masterclass at SIBS 3/4 August

He learned to sail in Manly Juniors from Clontarf beach and as he grew in age and experience moved on through skiffs to open keel boats. David is to be one of the speakers at the Cruising Masterclass (3/4 August) at this year's Sydney International Boat Show, speaking on a subject he knows well, 'Cruising to Tasmania'.

In his seminar on 'Cruising to Tasmania' David will share some of his experiences as a spare time cruiser and pass on the best advice received when planning his first trip south with his wife Janna. David will give advice about some of the good anchorages, some of those not so good, and talk strategically about the best ways and times to get to the Apple Isle.

A first time voyage is usually a cause for concern and David will describe how he went about preparing his crew and his boat and generally tried to make sure everybody involved wanted to come back and do it again. If you haven't cruised to Hobart, but would like to one summer, David's personal advice will be invaluable.

About David Champtaloup:
While his sailing skills were honed in Australian waters, his Aussie sailing life was cut short when, in 1975, David left Australia for New York to begin what was to become a 25-year career in the international television industry.

As if he couldn't wait to get back, David joined the CYCA in 1997, before his return to Sydney and before his purchase of Caprice of Huon, one of Australia's most famed yachts. Back in Australia he raced regularly in the short haul series, and achieved winning the overall IRC pointscore.

But David is not a mere racing sailor. He and his wife Janna also began cruising the lovely Caprice of Huon up and down the eastern coastline of Australia, to the Whitsundays, across to Lord Howe Island, and finally put the stamp on his identity as a cruising sailor by cruising as a participant in the CYCA's inaugural Rendezvous Cruise to Hobart in 2009.

This is not an official club event, but a gathering of like-minded cruising sailors who agree to rendezvous in Tasmania during their luscious summer season.

David joined the Board of Directors of the CYCA in July 2009, is chairman of the Cruising and Archives Committees, a member of Members Services Committee and is the club's representative to the Yachting NSW Cruising Committee.

As part of a small group of committed club members, David is behind the development of the blue water cruising program at the CYCA.

Away from his sailing life, David runs a privately owned media company and is a long serving Adjunct Professor to the Business Faculty of the University of Technology, Sydney.

About Caprice of Huon:

Caprice of Huon is a Robert Clarke design, 45ft in length, launched in 1951 from Port Cygnet on the Huon River. Caprice has a famous racing history under the ownership of Gordon Ingate, in particular as part of the Australia teams at the 1965 and 1967 Admirals Cup. Caprice was extensively restored in 1999 and enjoys an active schedule of cruising and participation in club racing. A special 2000 edition of the UKís Classic Boat magazine nominated Caprice as one their top 150 boats.
