Spirit of New Zealand will be taking part in an international Tall Ships event in Sydney in October 2013. The event will involve tall ships from around the world attending celebrations in Sydney Harbour before taking part in a special tall ship regatta race to Auckland.

The Spirit of Adventure Trust is offering 40, 17-25 year olds the chance to sail from Sydney to Auckland on the iconic tall ship, Spirit of New Zealand.

The Spirit will leave Sydney on 9 October and is expected to take 15 days to reach Auckland, depending on the weather.

The cost for each Trainee is $3,000 and all onboard will be actively involved in sailing the ship and assisting the crew. This voyage is open to both new and past trainees.

The Spirit of Adventure Trust is currently celebrating its 40th year and was established in 1972 to provide young New Zealanders with access to a character development programme conducted in the maritime environment.

The three-masted barquentine Spirit of New Zealand was commissioned in 1986. Since the retirement of the Spirit of Adventure in 1997, she has undertaken an annual programme of around 340 days at sea.

She is believed to be probably the world’s busiest youth ship.

Subject to stringent, ongoing maintenance surveys, refits and audits, Spirit of New Zealand is expected to be able to continue operating youth voyages until around 2035. The trust aims to offer equal opportunity to young New Zealanders to develop qualities of leadership, independence and community spirit through the medium of the sea.

The organisation aims to develop trainees to be confident, connected, resilient, actively involved, lifelong learners and networkers.
