Dr. Stanley Paris First to Finish the Single-Handed Leg of the Bermuda One-Two John Snyder
First across the finish line in the single-handed leg of the Bermuda One-Two Yacht Race, was none other than Dr. Stanley Paris. Sailing Kiwi Spirit, a Lyman Morse 63 designed by Bruce Farr. Paris took line honors when he crossed the finish line at 0740 ADT on Wednesday June 12, 2013.
The second and final leg back to Newport began today 1200 ADT as the wind shifted WSW to SSW. Kiwi Spirit with Paris and his son Alan aboard improved their start performance over the Newport start by 30 seconds. In Newport Paris was late by 1.5 minutes.
Stanley Paris, 75, is not a new comer to sailing and endurance pursuits. He has logged over 60,000 miles sailing, twice swam the English Channel, and competed in the Ironman World Championship triathlon. This year he raced a motorbike coast to coast in under 50 hours and completed a half-marathon.
The Bermuda One-Two, and other races will serve as part of Paris’ training as he prepares himself and Kiwi Spirit for a solo, non-stop circumnavigation scheduled to begin in St. Augustine, Fla. in November 2013. Paris plans to challenge Maine sailor Dodge Morgan’s 1986 solo circumnavigation record of 150 days aboard American Promise. If he succeeds he will also have been the oldest solo, nonstop circumnavigator.
