This weekend, celebrate Summer Sailstice on the solstice

by John Arndt/Sail-World Cruising on 21 Jun 2013
Summer sailstice, Viking style SW
It doesn't take much to enjoy sailing! Some like it fast. Some like it slow. Some like it really, really fast!! But it never gets better than on the longest days of the year, so get ready to celebrate the solstice this coming weekend - 'Summer Sailstice!'

One weekend a year, we get together to capture a global 'picture' of the world of sailing. Who's sailing, where are we sailing, what are we sailing. Look closely at Summer Sailstice and you'll see tallships and small ships. Fast ships and slow ones. Competitors and cruisers. Taken all together, it's a magnificent picture of the sailing lifestyle worth celebrating.

What part of sailing do you represent? One design racer? Beach cat cruiser? Bluewater adventurer? Put your weekend sailing plans on the Summer Sailstice site - there's still time if you are quick - to allow the world to catch a glimpse of all that sailing has to offer.

The Summer Sailstice map page is now covered in events of all sorts - barbecues to regattas. Club open houses to invite new sailors, celebrations and parties for current sailors. The list of participating boat models seems endless - three different small trimarans - Hobie Islands, Windriders and Wetas. Lots of one-design classes: Flying Scots, Ensigns, Sonars, Lasers, Sunfish and more. There's all make and manner of racer/cruisers. Is your class or club represented?

Our environmental partner, www.sailorsforthesea.org!Sailors_for_the_Sea, is working with the America's Cup Healthy Oceans Project to raise awareness of ocean conservation. Literally hundreds of sailors have responded to use Summer Sailstice to pledge funds for every mile sailed on Summer Sailstice weekend. The funds collected help Sailors for the Sea's ocean conservation programs. If you'd still like to join, just email info@sailorsforthesea.org.
