Normandy Sailing Week – Winners decided in Le Havre

by Kate Jennings on 10 Jun 2013 Normandy Sailing Week came to a close today with victory going to the crews of Franck Cammas, Franck-Yves Escoffier, Arthur Herreman, Noel Racine, John Van Der Starre and Gilles Fournier in the M34, IRC 2, J80, IRC 3 and 4, J111, IRC1 and First 7.5. categories. Over the last eight years, Normandy Sailing Week has become a reference for one-designs and racer-cruisers, drawing an ever-increasing number of yacht racing enthusiasts to Le Havre. During a week of competition for the M34s and three to four days for the J111s, IRCs and sportsboats, 800 racers contested a wealth of races in some sunny but boisterous sailing conditions, which saw the wind pick up to 38 knots on Saturday’s coastal course for the big boats. Franck Cammas and his crew, already champions of this year’s Iroise Cup, dominated at Normandy Sailing Week with a 22-point lead over 'Courrier Dunkerque 3' skippered by Daniel Souben.

Franck Cammas, winner of the last Volvo Ocean Race, the crewed round the world race with stopovers, is leading the French Crewed Championship and has won the Volvo Drive E Race, a competition which takes the combined points from the first three events of the season. 'Groupama 34' pulled out all the stops, securing six bullets in total. With an entourage of Tour de France à la Voile specialists, ‘bodyguards’ and champions of inshore racing, the Frenchman has once again stamped his mark at the top of the leaderboard and is sure to be the favourite for the Tour de France à la Voile, which will kick-off from Dunkirk at the end of June. With his team, Franck-Yves Escoffier, another famous figure from French offshore racing, secured the top spot in IRC2. The sailor from nearby Saint Malo dominated proceedings in both the round-the-cans and coastal races in the Baie de Seine. In the J80 class, today proved decisive as just one point separated the top two protagonists in last night’s overall ranking. However, thanks to a consistent performance, Arthur Herreman’s local team on 'Match the World' bagged the top spot and are sure to be a force to be reckoned with in the upcoming World Championship in Marseille! 'Foggy Dew' skippered by Noel Racine, another pillar of the sizeable sailing community in Le Havre, came good for the second time at Normandy Sailing Week in the IRC3 and IRC 4 categories, with a certain talented Breton on the helm, Jimmy Pahun. In the J111 category, 'Xcentric Ripper', skippered by John Van Der Starre, is the first European Champion in the history of this series. With a three-point lead over Briton Duncan McDonald, the Dutch team sailed a flawless Normandy Sailing Week in their 4-day event.

Franck Cammas, skipper of the M34 'Groupama 34', winner of Normandy Sailing Week 2013: 'It’s a fine victory as we’ve finished the race with a good lead over our rivals. We’re at ease in the breeze. Things have always come good for me on Le Havre’s race zone. We’re constantly making progress on our M34. Our team is new to this craft. The Tour de France à la Voile is going to be thrilling now that Nicolas Troussel’s team having upped their game, 'Courrier Dunkerque 3' will be in great shape and 'Sodebo' too I’m sure.' We didn’t manage to stay in the battle for victory and we finished too far behind 'Groupama 34' and too close to third. We’re going to quickly refocus for the Tour de France à la Voile and we have a serious amount of work to do on our sails. Last year we lost at Normandy Sailing Week, but that didn’t mean we weren’t able to sail a blinder at the start of the Tour de France'.

Nicolas Troussel, skipper of 'Bretagne – Crédit Mutuel Elite': 'We missed out on second place in Normandy Sailing Week due to the final tack of the day. It’s a shame but it remains a great performance. We’re better than we were at the start of the season. We’ll be firing on all cylinders at the start of the Tour de France à la Voile and we will be in contention for the win'. Damien Jouen, crewman aboard 'Foggy Dew': 'It’s a pleasure to have sailed with Jimmy Pahun, who’s a mightily talented helmsman. Things are better immediately when he’s around! The racing was really tight right to the finish, but we were in winning form in the lively conditions throughout the weekend'. Arthur Herreman, skipper of the J80 'Match the World': 'We’re gunning for the top five in the World Championships in July. It’s an absolute delight to win Normandy Sailing Week on home waters. It all came down to the final race. We’re continuing to improve and have the means to succeed'.
